Travel advisory: The US government advises against all travel to Myanmar, and the UK advises against all travel to Sagaing and the area north of Mandalay and against all but essential travel to the city itself. Conflict, drone strikes, curfews and internet shutdowns are part of daily life in the region, and the March 2025 earthquake damaged many sights. Walking Tours in Mandalay

Mandalay is a large, flat grid city with heat, dust and few pavements, and it has never been a strong walking destination. Walking tours here historically covered a few clusters of sights. None can be confirmed open now.

Areas visitors walked

• Around the palace and Kuthodaw Pagoda: the palace moat, the 729 marble slabs and the nearby monasteries. The palace walls were damaged in the March 2025 earthquake, and Kuthodaw sustained serious structural damage.
• Mandalay Hill: covered stairways climbed barefoot to hilltop temples. Access is unconfirmed.
• U Bein Bridge: a teak footbridge of about 1.2 kilometres at Amarapura, walked at dawn and dusk. Its state is unconfirmed.

Craft quarters near the Mahamuni area were also visited. Mahamuni itself had a building collapse in the earthquake, and reopening is unconfirmed. Street food tours and night markets are subject to curfews, which carry a risk of detention if ignored.
