Travel advisory: Official advice is to stay away: the US advises against all travel to Myanmar, and the UK advises against all but essential travel to Mandalay and against all travel to Sagaing and the area north of the city. Fighting, drone attacks, curfews and internet shutdowns continue, and many places were damaged in the March 2025 earthquake. Check the US State Department and UK FCDO before making plans.

Walking Tours in Mandalay Region

Self-guided walks around the Mandalay Region have historically combined short strolls at several well-known sites. The condition and access of each are unconfirmed since the March 2025 earthquake.

Places walked

• Mandalay city: the palace moat and Kuthodaw Pagoda, which sustained serious structural damage.
• Mandalay Hill: covered stairways to hilltop temples. Access is unconfirmed.
• Amarapura: the teak U Bein Bridge, historically crossed at dawn and dusk. Its state is unconfirmed.
• Mingun and Sagaing Hill: a riverside village and a monastery ridge in Sagaing Region, where the UK advises against all travel. Hsinbyume Pagoda is largely destroyed.

Mahamuni Pagoda stands in the south of the city, not on Mandalay Hill. Dress codes at religious sites have always required covered shoulders and knees and no footwear.
