Tokyo Sightseeing and When To Book
Two Tokyo sights need a plan weeks out. Most of the rest can wait until the morning of. Here is which is which.
Book weeks ahead
Shibuya Sky releases tickets two weeks before each date, roughly at midnight, and sunset slots have sold out globally within sixty seconds to two minutes of release. Check the release calendar and set a reminder rather than checking the week of your trip. Ghibli Museum works on a similar clock but a longer cycle: tickets go on sale at 10am on the 10th of each month for the following month, first-come-first-served through Lawson Ticket, not a lottery despite what older guides claim, and they are gone within minutes.
Book a few days ahead
Tokyo Skytree and Tokyo Tower both reward booking ahead without demanding it. Skytree’s combined Tembo Deck and Tembo Galleria ticket runs 2,700 to 3,100 yen, and advance booking through the official Skytree site saves up to 400 yen over a same-day purchase while guaranteeing a timed slot. Tokyo Tower’s Top Deck Tour, a staff-guided route up to 250 meters, runs about 3,300 yen booked ahead versus 3,500 on the day; the official ticket page has current pricing.
Free, and no booking needed
Senso-ji and its Nakamise shopping street, Meiji Shrine, and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building’s twin 45th-floor observatories all cost nothing and need no reservation. The Government Building also runs a free light show on its east facade most evenings from sunset to around 9pm, arguably the best value view in the city for zero planning.
The market correction worth knowing before you go
Toyosu, not Tsukiji, is where the tuna auction and wholesale trading happen now, and have since October 2018. Tsukiji’s outer market, more than 460 shops and stalls, is still open and still worth an early visit for a seafood breakfast, but book nothing there expecting an auction; that experience is at Toyosu Market , where a free observation gallery opens at 5am.
One more correction
Ueno Zoo, Japan’s oldest, lost its last pandas in January 2026 when Xiao Xiao and Lei Lei returned to China. It remains a solid stop with around 2,600 other animals, just not the panda destination older content still describes.
