Vagharshapat (Etchmiadzin) Sightseeing Guide

1. Etchmiadzin Cathedral (Էջմիադզին Սուրբ եխաղփատրություն վանք, Eçmiadzin Surp Ekc’axt’rut’yun vank’):

   • Location: The main cathedral is located in the heart of Vagharshapat.
   • History: Built in the early 4th century AD, Etchmiadzin Cathedral is one of the oldest Christian churches in the world and the mother church of the Armenian Apostolic Church.
   • What to see: Ornate frescoes, intricate carvings, and a stunning golden altarpiece. Visitors are welcomed to explore the cathedral during regular visiting hours.

2. Ararat Brandy Factory:

   • Location: Approximately 3 km from Etchmiadzin Cathedral.
   • History: Founded in 1887, Ararat Brandy Factory is one of the oldest and most renowned brandy producers in Armenia.
   • What to do: Take a guided tour to learn about the process of making Armenian cognac, followed by a tasting session featuring various age-old brandies.

3. Saint Hripsime Church (Սուրբ Հռիսպեմե վանք, Surp Hripsimayi vank’):

   • Location: Located on the outskirts of Vagharshapat.
   • History: Constructed in the 7th century AD, Saint Hripsime Church is named after a martyr who was one of the 30 female companions of St. Gregory the Illuminator.
