Sightseeing in Hegra: A Unique Experience in Saudi Arabia

Hegra, also known as Al-Ḥijr or Mada’in Salih, is an ancient city located in the vast Empty Quarter (Rub’ al Khali) of Saudi Arabia. This UNESCO World Heritage Site offers a unique insight into the Nabatean civilization that once thrived here over 2000 years ago.

Location and Access: Hegra is situated approximately 130 km northwest of Medina, in the Al-Madinah region of Saudi Arabia. It can be reached by car via a well-maintained road. Visitors are advised to plan their journey during daylight hours due to the harsh desert conditions.

Opening Hours: Hegra is open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Sunday through Thursday. It is closed on Fridays and Saturdays.

Tips for Visiting:

  1. Wear appropriate clothing that covers arms and legs, and a headscarf or hat for women. This is respectful of the local culture and customs.
  2. Carry water and sunscreen as it can get very hot during the day.
  3. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended as there is a fair amount of walking involved.
