Water Activities in Uyuni
Welcome to Uyuni, a high-altitude desert town located in southwest Bolivia! While it’s primarily known for its stunning salt flats (Salar de Uyuni) and surreal landscapes, there are also some unique water activities you can enjoy during your visit.
-
Uyuni Salt Flats (Salar de Uyuni) Boat Tour
- The Uyuni Salt Flats transform into a giant mirror when filled with water after the rainy season (November to April).
- Take a boat tour and explore this unusual landscape, where you’ll feel as if you’re floating on air.
- Remember to bring sunscreen, a hat, and warm clothing, even during summer months, as the high altitude can lead to cool temperatures.
-
Laguna Colorada
- Approximately 3 hours from Uyuni, Laguna Colorado is a shallow salt lake known for its red-hued waters.
- The vibrant color comes from algae and sediment, as well as the abundant flamingo population that inhabits these shores.
- Visit during sunrise or sunset to capture stunning photos of this breathtaking landscape.
-
Laguna Verde
- Located near the Licancabur Volcano, Laguna Verde (Green Lagoon) is a beautiful turquoise lake filled with sulfuric mineral deposits that give it its greenish color.
- Keep an eye out for the nearby James Bond Island (Isla Incahuasi), covered in cacti and coral-like rock formations.
-
Polques Hot Springs
- After a long day of exploring, relax your muscles at the Polques hot springs located near Laguna Colorada.
- The warm mineral waters are said to have therapeutic properties, making them perfect for soaking away any travel-related aches and pains.
Please note that water activities in Uyuni are dependent on the rainy season (November to April). If you’re visiting during the dry season (May to October), no water activities can be conducted in these locations. Always check with local tour operators for the most accurate information on current conditions and availability.
Happy exploring!
