Romantic Getaways Ulaanbaatar
Water Activities in Ulaanbaatar
Ulaanbaatar, the capital city of Mongolia, might not be the first place that comes to mind when planning a water-based vacation. However, there are some options for enjoying water activities within or nearby the city!
Terelj National Park
Located approximately 75 kilometers (46 miles) east of Ulaanbaatar, Terelj National Park is home to several small rivers and lakes. You can engage in activities such as river rafting, kayaking, or even fishing. The best time for water activities is during the summer months when the weather is warm.
Nuusal Lake
Nuusal Lake, located within the city limits of Ulaanbaatar, offers a serene spot to enjoy boating and fishing. It’s a great place for a leisurely afternoon outing. Note that the lake tends to freeze over during the harsh Mongolian winters, so water activities are limited to the warmer months.
Tsenkher Hot Springs
While not strictly a water activity destination, the Tsenkher Hot Springs (around 160 km or 100 miles west of Ulaanbaatar) offer an opportunity for relaxation in natural hot springs. The nearby Elsen Tasarkhai valley also has a small river suitable for a casual swim during the summer months.
Remember to always check the local weather conditions and respect the environment when participating in water activities. Safety equipment may not be readily available, so it’s essential to be prepared with your own safety gear if possible.
No Water: If you are visiting Ulaanbaatar during the winter months or outside the city, you will find that most of the locations suitable for water activities are inaccessible due to frozen rivers and lakes. In such cases, consider indoor activities like visiting museums or experiencing Mongolian culture at traditional folklore shows.
