San José Province: Water Activities Overview
Welcome to San José Province, Costa Rica! Although the province doesn’t have coastal areas, it still offers a variety of water activities in its numerous lakes and rivers. Here are some tips for enjoying water activities during your visit.

Lake Arenal: This popular destination is home to a vast lake where you can engage in various water sports such as kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), and boat tours. Lake Arenal also offers an opportunity to experience an exciting sunrise or sunset over the water.

Rafting on the Pacuare River: Located nearby, the Pacuare River is internationally renowned for its thrilling white-water rafting opportunities. This Class III and IV rapids adventure provides stunning views of the lush rainforest.

Catarata del Toro Waterfall: While not a water activity per se, this waterfall located near Lake Arenal can be reached by a 20-minute boat ride on Lake Arenal followed by a short hike. The waterfall offers an excellent spot for swimming and relaxing.

Poás Volcano National Park: Visit this active volcano and explore its famous turquoise-colored crater lake, which is one of the largest active volcanic crater lakes in the world. Boat tours are available to get a closer look at the lake’s unique ecosystem.

Barva Volcano National Park: Located near San José city, this park features a crater lake called Laguna Cedeno. Although it is not possible to swim in the lake due to its acidity, you can take a boat tour around it to admire the stunning surroundings and spot various bird species.

Irazú Volcano National Park: With two crater lakes, Irazú offers an opportunity to hike to the summit and explore these unique geological formations. The higher lake is known for its vibrant turquoise color when the weather conditions are right.
