Romantic Cartagena for Couples
Travel advisory: The US State Department rates Colombia Level 3, “Reconsider Travel” (issued 31 March 2026), and the UK FCDO advises against travel to border and rural regions, including southern Bolívar Department, but does not name Cartagena. Couples should know the local risks: phone and chain snatching, scopolamine slipped into drinks (including through dating-app meetups), and unlicensed taxis. Take app or hotel-booked cars after dark, watch your own drinks, and keep jewellery out of sight. Current advice is on the US State Department and UK FCDO pages.
Cartagena suits couples who like warm evenings, old stone streets and the sea. The romantic options below run from free sunsets on the walls to a sunset sail and a hotel stay in Getsemaní. Peso prices use about 3,200 COP to US$1, so check the day’s rate.
Sunset on the walls
The Baluarte de Santo Domingo is a free public viewpoint on the walls, and walking the ramparts at the end of the day costs nothing. The walls are open to the public, and about 11 km of them are described by Colombia’s tourism site. Bring water, wear comfortable shoes, and do not climb on the stonework. Drinking alcohol in public spaces is illegal in Colombia, so save the drinks for a terrace after the walk.
A sunset sail
Catamarans leave from the Muelle de la Bodeguita, at the edge of the Walled City. Bonavida is on the official operator list on the Corpoturismo page . A sunset sail of about 2 hours has been listed at roughly 131,000 COP for an adult (an undated listing, so confirm), with boarding before 5pm. Wear the lifejackets provided, and check the sea flags with the operator.
A long dinner in Getsemaní
Celele, on Calle del Espíritu Santo in Getsemaní, appeared on Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants list in 2025 and won its Sustainable Restaurant Award that year. The menu is a seasonal carta, and prices are not confirmed, so check and reserve through the restaurant’s official site . Opening days may vary. Getsemaní is lively at night, but street theft is a documented problem there, so keep phones in a pocket and take a taxi back.
Where to stay
The Four Seasons Hotel and Residences opened in Getsemaní on 2 April 2026. Casa San Agustín, a boutique hotel across three 17th-century houses with the restaurant Alma, is also listed in recent guides; confirm its current status before you book. For a different pace, spend a night on Barú instead of the city.
A quiet island day
Pao Pao Beach Club is described as the quieter sister of Bora Bora in the Rosario archipelago. Island days carry three cash charges outside the tour price: a pier-use fee (roughly 18,000 to 34,000 COP), park entry (13,500 COP in the Rosario sector) and compulsory accident insurance, reported at about 8,800 COP. Beach club day prices run from about US$70 to 150 per person according to resellers.
Tips for couples
- Go to the walls an hour before sunset to find a good spot.
- Walk Getsemaní’s murals by day and return for dinner by taxi.
- Accept drinks only from a bartender you can see.
