Phuket: Where to Stay by Beach

Phuket is roughly 48km north to south, and it does not work as a single base. Pick one of these 8 areas, then day trip out from there rather than switching hotels mid-trip.

  1. Patong: nightlife and budget-to-mid range, the most convenient base for late arrivals, and the loudest by far. Bad for quiet swims.
  2. Kata: the best all-round first-timer choice, a good beach without Patong’s noise, still close enough to reach it.
  3. Karon: quieter still, a long wide beach close to both Patong and Freedom Beach, though it sees the most reported rip-current incidents on the island.
  4. Old Town: no beach, but this is where the cafes and Sino-Portuguese architecture are. The Memory at On On, Casa Blanca, and The Rommanee are the names to know here.
  5. Bang Tao and the Laguna complex: the closest high-end area to the airport. Banyan Tree, Angsana, Dusit Thani Laguna, and SAii anchor this stretch.
  6. Surin and Kamala: upscale beach-club rows, home to Trisara and Amanpuri.
  7. Nai Harn: relaxed and local, near Promthep Cape. The Nai Harn is the name here.
  8. Nai Yang and Mai Khao: quiet beaches inside Sirinat National Park , near the airport for early flights. Phuket Marriott Nai Yang, SALA, and Anantara Mai Khao cover this area.

For a genuine splurge above even that tier, Rosewood, Keemala, and COMO Point Yamu are the names worth researching.

Two practical points on top of the area choice. Price swings hard with the season: December to February is peak, with the best weather, the highest rates, and rooms that sell out weeks ahead, while the May to October green season drops prices sharply in exchange for rougher seas, passing rain, and the west coast’s rip currents at their worst. And factor in the airport transfer, since the island is large: Bang Tao and the northern beaches sit only 25 to 35 minutes from the terminal, whereas Patong, Kata, and Karon are a 45-to-60-minute Grab through traffic, which matters most on a late-night arrival. There is no train to the island either way.
