Memphis: Where to Base Your Trip
Where you sleep in Memphis matters more than usual here, because most nights of a base-and-day-trip visit start or end with a drive. The right pick depends on how much of the trip stays in the city versus pushing on toward the Delta partway through.
Downtown/Beale/South Main
The obvious base for anyone splitting time between city sights and day trips: walkable to Beale Street and the National Civil Rights Museum, close to the interstate south toward Clarksdale and Tunica, and served by the Main Street Trolley ($1/ride, $2 day pass), though verify it’s running before you rely on it. The Peabody Memphis (149 Union Ave) is the standout historic pick here, a genuine luxury stay with the famous daily duck march in the lobby.
Whitehaven, near Graceland
If Graceland is the centerpiece of your city days, the Guest House at Graceland, the official on-site hotel, puts you steps from the timed-entry tour and runs a shuttle to downtown, Beale Street, and the airport, useful if you’d rather not drive every leg of the city portion. Stick to the attraction itself in the evening rather than wandering the surrounding blocks, the complex is safe and self-contained, but the wider Whitehaven neighborhood is higher-crime after dark.
Midtown and East Memphis
Overton Square, Cooper-Young, and the East Memphis suburbs are quieter, residential-feeling bases, a reasonable choice if you want distance from Beale Street’s nightlife but still easy access to Sun Studio, Overton Park, and Shelby Farms.
Pushing on to Clarksdale
If your trip includes a Delta overnight rather than a same-day round trip, the Shack Up Inn in Clarksdale, about 75-95 minutes south on Highway 61, is worth booking directly instead of a generic hotel. Its rooms are sharecropper shacks converted for guests, genuinely part of the Delta blues experience rather than just a place to sleep, and they book up on weekends, so reserve ahead if that’s part of your plan.
Booking around events
May is a booking-spike month in Memphis between RiverBeat (May 1-3) and the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest (May 13-16), and Elvis Week (August 8-16) spikes hotel prices specifically around Graceland. Book weeks ahead if your dates land anywhere in those windows, in Memphis and, if relevant, in Clarksdale too.
