Kagoshima, Japan Travel Tips
Kagoshima Travel and Cultural Etiquette Tips
-
Bowing: Bowing is a common form of greeting in Japan. The depth and length of the bow depends on the situation, but as a tourist, a shallow bow (about 15-30 degrees) should be sufficient.
-
Remove Shoes: Many homes, temples, and traditional Japanese inns (ryokans) require you to remove your shoes before entering. Be prepared to wear slippers provided.
-
Temple Etiquette: When visiting temples or shrines, remember to wash and rinse your hands before offering money into the donation box or clapping twice to get the attention of a god or Buddha. Also, make sure to bow properly when entering and leaving.
-
Eating Etiquette: Use chopsticks correctly, never stick them vertically in rice as it resembles incense sticks for dead relatives. Eat and drink only when everyone has been served. It is also considered impolite to slurp your soup loudly.
-
Gift Giving: If invited to someone’s home, it’s customary to bring a small gift such as fruits, sweets, or sake. Avoid giving knives, clocks (symbolize death), or anything in black wrapping paper, as these are associated with funerals.
-
Public Behavior: Respect public spaces and silence on trains and buses. Also, avoid pointing with your index finger; instead, use the entire hand to indicate direction.
-
Tipping: Tipping is not customary in Japan. In fact, it might offend as it implies that you think their service requires payment beyond what has been charged.
-
Dress Code: While casual attire is acceptable in most tourist areas, when visiting temples or shrines, modest clothing is expected. Shoulders and knees should be covered for both men and women.
-
Smoking: Smoking is restricted in many public places in Japan, including some train stations, restaurants, and shopping centers. Always check for signs before lighting up.
-
Respecting Local Customs: Be aware of local customs and traditions, especially during festivals. Dress appropriately, follow instructions, and always ask if unsure about what is expected.
