Valencia: A Vibrant Calendar of Local Festivals and Events
🏺 Fallas (March)
One of the most famous and unique celebrations in Valencia is Fallas, held annually from March 15 to March 19, culminating on the day of Saint Joseph (March 19). The city transforms into a gigantic open-air museum as thousands of large and small sculptures, called “ninots”, are displayed throughout Valencia. On the final night, these structures are set ablaze in a spectacular display of fire and light.
🌳 Plantà de l’Alberco del Carrer de la Verge (June)
This traditional event takes place on the eve of Saint John the Baptist’s day (San Juan), which falls on June 24. A large palm tree is carried from the port to the heart of Valencia, and the ceremony involves a procession, music, and dance.
🎭 València en Festa (Summer)
During the summer months, Valencia comes alive with various cultural events, including street theater performances, concerts, and open-air cinema screenings as part of València en Festa. Some of these events are held in the City of Arts and Sciences.
🍊 La Tomatina (Last Wednesday of August)
A well-known tomato fight takes place in the town of Buñol, just a short trip from Valencia. On the last Wednesday of August, participants gather to throw ripe tomatoes at each other in a fun and messy celebration known as La Tomatina.
🐃 El Pilar (October 12)
Celebrated on October 12, this festival honors the patron saint of Valencia, Our Lady of the Assumption. The festivities include processions, fireworks, and a traditional bullfight in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento.
🎆 Nit de Foc (December 31)
Valencia rings in the New Year with Nit de Foc, a stunning fireworks display over the Turia River. The city’s skyline is illuminated, and there are various concerts and parties throughout Valencia to welcome the new year.
🎭 Mercat Medieval (December)
During the Christmas season, Valencia hosts a medieval market, complete with costumed performers, artisans, and traditional food and drinks. Visitors can immerse themselves in the sights, sounds, and tastes of medieval Spain at this popular event.
