Mecca, the holiest city of Islam, is not only a spiritual center but also a vibrant hub of cultural activities and local events. Here are some significant festivals and occasions celebrated in Mecca throughout the year:

Hajj (Pilgrimage)

The most important event in Mecca is the annual Hajj pilgrimage, which takes place during the last month of the Islamic calendar (Dhu al-Hijjah). Millions of Muslims from around the world gather to perform this religious duty and commemorate the life of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). The Hajj is one of the Five Pillars of Islam and is considered a once-in-a-lifetime obligation for every capable Muslim.

‘Umrah

The ‘Umrah, or lesser pilgrimage, can be performed at any time during the year except the 10 days of Hajj. This pilgrimage is not obligatory but is highly recommended. This day commemorates Prophet Ibrahim’s (Abraham) willingness to sacrifice his son Ismail (Ishmael) for Allah’s sake. Mawlid al-Nabi (Prophet Muhammad’s Birthday)

Mawlid al-Nabi, also known as Milad un Nabi, is celebrated on the 12th day of Rabi’ al-Awwal to commemorate the birth of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). In Mecca, this occasion is marked by special prayers, recitation of Quran, and processions.
