Dubai Travel and Cultural Etiquette Tips
-
Respect the Local Culture: Dubai is an Islamic city, so it’s essential to be respectful of its culture and traditions. Avoid public displays of affection and dress modestly. Women should wear clothes that cover their shoulders and knees.
-
Greeting: The traditional Arabic greeting is As-Salamu Alaykum (Peace be upon you). It’s polite to respond with Wa ‘alaykum as-salam (And upon you peace). However, a simple “Hello” or “Hi” is also widely understood.
-
Business Etiquette: Business hours are from Sunday through Wednesday, 9 AM to 5 PM, and Fridays are half days. Thursdays are dedicated to personal errands. Always carry your business card as they are widely used in Dubai.
-
Tipping: Tipping is customary in Dubai. Restaurants often add a service charge to the bill, but it’s common to give an additional 10%. For taxi drivers and valets, round up to the nearest Dirham (AED).
-
Shopping Etiquette: Haggling is acceptable in traditional markets (Souks), but not in malls or large stores. Bargaining can be a fun part of the shopping experience!
-
Food and Drink: Alcohol can only be consumed in licensed premises, such as hotels, restaurants, and clubs. It’s illegal to drink in public places.
-
Photography: Be respectful when taking photographs, especially in mosques or areas involving local residents. Always ask for permission before taking someone’s photo.
-
Public Behavior: Public displays of affection are considered offensive. Chewing gum in public places is prohibited.
-
Ramadan: During Ramadan, avoid eating, drinking, or smoking in public during daylight hours. It’s also important to respect the religious observances and activities that take place during this month.
-
Driving Etiquette: Driving rules are enforced strictly in Dubai. Always wear a seatbelt, observe speed limits, and don’t use mobile phones while driving unless using a hands-free device.
