Day Trips in Saqqaq (Sainshand), Mongolia
Saqqaq, also known as Sainshand, is a small town located in the Dundgovi province of Mongolia. Despite its size, it serves as an excellent base for exciting day trips that offer a glimpse into Mongolia’s rich history, culture, and natural beauty. Here are some suggestions for your day trips:
-
Khongor Sand Dunes (Singing Dunes): Approximately 230 km east of Saqqaq, these magnificent dunes can reach up to 200 meters high. The dunes are particularly beautiful at sunrise and sunset. Don’t forget to listen carefully as the wind blowing over the dunes creates a unique singing sound.
- Tips: Take plenty of water and sun protection. Camel treks are a great way to explore the dunes.
-
Yolyn Am (Eagle Valley): Located about 150 km southeast of Saqqaq, this picturesque valley is home to the Gobi Bear, snow leopards, and argali sheep. In winter, the ice can reach up to 20 meters thick.
- Tips: The best time to visit is during spring when the ice thaws and waterfalls form. Be prepared for cold weather as the valley remains frozen for much of the year.
-
Bayanzag (Flaming Cliffs): Known for the numerous dinosaur fossils found here, Bayanzag is about 60 km northeast of Saqqaq. The red cliffs provide a striking backdrop against which you can imagine the prehistoric creatures that once roamed this land.
- Tips: This area is protected, so make sure to respect the environment and avoid disturbing any fossils or wildlife.
-
Ongi Temple Monastery: Located about 120 km southwest of Saqqaq, Ongi Temple Monastery was once one of Mongolia’s largest monasteries. Although much of it was destroyed during the purges in the 1930s, some structures remain and offer a glimpse into Mongolian Buddhism.
- Tips: Combine your visit with a hike through the beautiful surrounding landscape.
