Barcelona Museums and Free-Entry Days
Free museum entry in Barcelona is real, generous even, and almost never a walk-in. Every free window below still asks for an online reservation, and skipping that step is how a genuinely free day turns into a closed door.
Museu Picasso: two free windows, one catch
General admission runs EUR 12 for the permanent collection or EUR 14 with temporary exhibitions, always free under 18. Free entry lands on the first Sunday of every month and on Thursday evenings, winter (October to April) 16:00-19:00 for the permanent collection only, summer (May to September) Thursday through Saturday evenings 19:00-21:00. Every free slot still needs an online booking, released four days ahead at 10:00 Barcelona time, and they go quickly at museupicassobarcelona.org . Book a Picasso Museum ticket if the free slots for your dates are already gone.
MNAC: a Saturday afternoon that costs nothing
The Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya charges EUR 12 general admission, covering the permanent collection, temporary exhibitions and the rooftop terrace’s panoramic view; reduced EUR 10 for students and over-65s. Free entry runs every Saturday from 15:00 onward and every first Sunday of the month, with online reservation recommended rather than required for capacity control. Under-16s, EU residents over 65 and ICOM members get in free at any time; museunacional.cat has the current hours. Reserve MNAC tickets covers the paid slots outside the Saturday window.
Articket BCN: worth it only if the itinerary earns it
EUR 38 flat, unchanged this year, for one visit each to six major art museums over 12 months: Museu Picasso, Fundacio Miro, MACBA, Fundacio Tapies, CCCB and MNAC. Individual entry to Fundacio Miro alone runs close to EUR 14, so the card only pencils out once an itinerary genuinely covers three or more of the six; run the actual list against the actual days before assuming the bundle saves money. A visitor set on just Picasso and MNAC is better off paying those two admissions directly and saving the rest of the EUR 38 for something else entirely. articketbcn.org carries current participating venues and validity terms.
Stay in the Eixample or El Raval to cut walking time between MNAC, Museu Picasso and the Articket venues clustered near them. Search hotels in Eixample, Barcelona if location matters more than price for a museum-heavy stay, and set a calendar reminder for 10:00 four days before any free Picasso slot you actually want. Our attraction tours guide covers the Barcelona Card math for anyone stacking these museums against other paid sights.
