Travel and Cultural Etiquette Tips for Tourists in Bali, Indonesia
1. Respect Balinese Culture
- Dress Modestly: Cover your shoulders and knees when visiting temples or other religious sites. It is a sign of respect to the local culture.
- Remove Shoes: When entering homes, temples or sacred places, remove your shoes as a mark of respect.
2. Greetings and Communication
- Greeting: Balinese people often greet each other with a slight bow with hands pressed together at the chest (known as “gotong royong”). Tourists can use a handshake, but wait for the Balinese person to extend their hand first.
- Language: While Bahasa Indonesia is the official language of Indonesia, most Balinese speak Balinese and some English, especially in tourist areas. Learning basic phrases like ’terima kasih’ (thank you) can go a long way.
3. Tipping and Gift Giving
- Tipping: It is customary to tip hotel staff, tour guides, and drivers. A reasonable amount for a day of service from a driver is around $5-$10 USD.
- Gift Giving: Small gifts are appreciated but avoid giving anything in fours (four flowers, four fruits, etc.), as the number four is associated with death in Balinese culture.
4. Religious Sensitivity
- Temple Etiquette: Always ask permission before entering a temple and observe any dress codes. Some temples may require you to rent a sash or sarong.
- Offerings: You will see small offerings (canang sari) everywhere in Bali. Do not disturb these as they are offerings to the gods and are considered sacred.
5. Behavior at the Beach
- Nudity: Nudity is not acceptable on any beaches in Bali, even if secluded.
- Respect Marine Life: Do not touch or harass marine life when snorkeling or diving.
6. Bartering and Haggling
- Shopping: It is expected to barter for prices at markets and shops. Start by offering a lower price, but be reasonable and fair.
- Respect the Artisans: Remember that the artisans are trying to make a living. If you can’t afford something, it’s okay to walk away instead of haggling down to an unfair price.
