Type “Azores bus tours” into a search bar and you’ll find plenty of results. Almost none of them are actually buses, and understanding why will save you a wasted morning standing in a village square.
What public buses actually are here
Auto Viação Micaelense, Varela & Cia, and CRP run São Miguel’s franchised bus routes, and they exist for exactly one purpose: getting schoolchildren and local workers between villages and towns. Departures run one to three times a day on most routes. None of them climb to Miradouro da Boca do Inferno, none reach the Lagoa do Fogo crater rim, and none stop anywhere near Caldeira Velha. Show up expecting a hop-on sightseeing loop and you’ll instead spend hours waiting in a rural square with nowhere useful to go.
Verdict: public transit fails as a touring strategy here
This isn’t a case of the system being merely inconvenient; it structurally does not serve the sights tourists come for. Anyone planning a self-guided Azores trip around public buses should abandon that plan before booking flights.
What actually functions as a “bus tour”
Inside Ponta Delgada itself, small tourist road trains, locally called the Lagarta, and short urban minibus loops cover the historic center, which is the one place a bus-shaped product genuinely works. Beyond the city, the real substitute for a bus tour is a guided small-group minibus or van tour: companies including Pure Azores, Picos de Aventura, and Greenzone run full-day and half-day trips in 8- to 16-seat Mercedes Sprinter vans, with hotel pickup, out to Sete Cidades, Furnas, and Lagoa do Fogo. These are the closest thing the islands offer to the sit-back-and-let-someone-else-drive experience a bus tour promises elsewhere in Europe.
The other real option: rent a car
If a group tour doesn’t fit your schedule, renting a car remains the default way to see São Miguel independently, since even the van tours run fixed routes on fixed days. Just remember that rental cars on São Miguel sell out completely from June through September, so book weeks or months ahead of a summer trip rather than assuming a counter will have something available on arrival.
