Travel advisory: Official advice is to stay away: the US advises against all travel to Myanmar, and the UK advises against all but essential travel to Mandalay and against all travel to Sagaing and the area north of the city. Fighting, drone attacks, curfews and internet shutdowns continue, and many places were damaged in the March 2025 earthquake. Check the US State Department and UK FCDO before making plans.

Attraction Tours in Mandalay Region

Attractions in the Mandalay Region have traditionally been grouped into city sights and day trips by river or road. The current status of each is unconfirmed.

Sites tours historically included

• Mandalay Palace: the last royal residence of the Burmese monarchy. Walls and a watchtower were damaged in the 2025 earthquake.
• Mandalay Hill: a sacred hill with covered stairways, temples and monasteries. Its condition is unreported.
• Mingun: an unfinished giant stupa, a very large bell and the Hsinbyume Pagoda, which is largely destroyed. Climbing the giant stupa is barred because of earthquake damage. Mingun is in Sagaing Region, where the UK advises against all travel.
• Inwa (Ava): an old capital reached by boat and horse cart. Most historic structures were damaged, and Maha Aungmye Bonzan is nearly destroyed. The Nanmyin watchtower is damaged and must not be climbed.
• Sagaing Hill: a ridge of monasteries and pagodas, also in Sagaing Region and unconfirmed.

Visitors at any religious site have been expected to dress modestly and remove footwear.
