Antalya Travel and Cultural Etiquette Tips
-
Greetings: In Turkey, a firm handshake is common among both men and women. For women, it’s acceptable to greet each other with a light touch on the forearm. Use titles for addresses (Professor, Doctor, etc.) when you first meet someone.
-
Dress Code: Modest dress is appreciated, especially in religious or conservative areas. Women should avoid showing too much skin and wear long skirts or trousers. Men are expected to wear long trousers as well. When visiting mosques, cover your shoulders, chest, and legs.
-
Mosque Etiquette: Remove your shoes before entering a mosque. Women must also cover their heads with a scarf. Follow the lead of local women when unsure about what to do.
-
Tip Politely: Service charges are often included in restaurant bills, but it’s still customary to leave small change as a sign of appreciation for good service. In other situations, such as a taxi ride or at hotels, rounding up the bill or leaving small change is appropriate.
-
Haggling: Shopping in local markets (bazaars) is common and expected. Don’t be afraid to negotiate prices. Remember that starting low will usually lead to a higher final price, so find a balance that feels fair for both parties.
-
Respect Local Customs: Turkey has a rich history, and many customs are deeply ingrained in their culture. Learn about the local traditions before your visit, and always ask for permission before taking photographs of people or private property.
-
Be Mindful of Ramadan: During this holy month, Muslims will fast during daylight hours. Avoid eating, drinking, or smoking in public during daytime hours out of respect for their observance.
-
Drinking Alcohol: Alcohol is widely available in Turkey, but it’s important to remember that many people, especially in conservative areas, do not consume alcohol. Be discreet and respectful when consuming alcohol in public.
-
Beach Etiquette: Topless sunbathing is illegal in Antalya, so always wear a swimsuit or cover-up on the beach. Also, remember to clean up after yourself and dispose of trash properly.
-
Respect the Environment: Turkey’s natural beauty is one of its greatest assets. Be mindful of your impact on the environment by not littering, staying on marked trails when hiking, and not picking wildflowers or taking souvenirs from nature.
