Water Activities in Riga
Riga, the charming capital of Latvia, is rich in history, culture, and natural beauty. It also offers a variety of exciting water activities for visitors who enjoy being on or near the water.
1. Central Market (Rīgas Centrāltirgus)
Located near Daugava River, the Central Market is one of Europe’s largest and oldest markets. While you’re there, take a boat tour along the river to appreciate Riga from a different perspective. Keep an eye out for the Freedom Monument and the National Library of Latvia.
2. Tourist Port
The Tourist Port is a great starting point for various water activities. You can rent kayaks, paddleboards, or boats to explore the Daugava River independently. Or, join a guided river cruise to learn about Riga’s history and architecture.
3. Jūrmala
Just a short train ride from Riga, Jūrmala is a coastal town with 32 kilometers of beautiful beaches on the Baltic Sea. Spend a day relaxing on the beach, swimming, or try out various water sports like windsurfing or kitesurfing.
4. Riga Canal
Running through the heart of the city, the Riga Canal is perfect for a leisurely canal boat tour. You’ll get to see some of Riga’s most famous sights from a unique angle.
Please note that some activities may not be suitable for those who are not strong swimmers or have health concerns. Always check safety regulations and guidelines before participating in any water activity.
No Water
Unfortunately, there are no significant bodies of water near the Old Town of Riga. However, you can still enjoy water-themed activities such as visiting the Latvian National Museum of Natural History to learn about marine life or dining at one of Riga’s many seafood restaurants.
