1. Tara National Park
Tara National Park is the forested plateau above the Drina river and Lake Perućac. The Mitrovac visitor centre is the base for walks, and Banjska Stena is a cliff viewpoint over the lake. Bears live in the park, so keep to marked trails. The Tara River canyon, where the white water rafting tours run, is across the border in Montenegro and Bosnia.
2. Šargan Eight Heritage Train
Near Mokra Gora, the Šargan Eight heritage train covers 15.5 km through 22 tunnels and across 5 bridges, and the round trip takes about an hour. Adults pay 1,500 RSD and children aged 6 to 14 pay 750 RSD. The summer season runs to about 30 October.
3. Earth Pillars at Đavolja Varoš
Đavolja Varoš, near Kuršumlija, is a field of 202 dry earth pillars between 2 and 15 m tall. Two springs there are strongly acidic, at pH 1.5 and 3.5, so keep well back from the water. Entry is 350 RSD, and the site is closed from December to March.
4. Hiking in Kopaonik National Park
Kopaonik is the largest national park in Serbia and a popular ski resort during winter. However, it’s also an excellent destination for hiking. With its diverse flora and fauna, numerous mountain peaks, and traditional villages, there’s plenty to explore throughout the year.
5. Rock Climbing in Stara Planina
Stara Planina (Old Mountain) is a mountain range that straddles Bulgaria and Serbia. The Serbian side offers various rock climbing routes for all levels of experience. Some popular spots include Zlatibor, Valjevo, and Toplica. Always check local regulations and consider hiring a guide for safety reasons.
Remember: Always prioritize your safety and respect the environment when engaging in adventure sports. Make sure to research the area, check weather conditions, and consider hiring a professional guide if needed. Enjoy your adventure sports journey through beautiful Serbia!
