Adventure Sports Mandalay
Travel advisory: The US government advises against all travel to Myanmar, and the UK advises against all travel to Sagaing and the area north of Mandalay and against all but essential travel to the city itself. Conflict, drone strikes, curfews and internet shutdowns are part of daily life in the region, and the March 2025 earthquake damaged many sights. See the US State Department and UK FCDO for current advice before you plan.
Adventure Sports in Mandalay
Mandalay has no established adventure sports industry. Rafting, paragliding, rock climbing and ziplining are not offered around the city, and none is advisable here.
What is actually there
- Mandalay Hill is a Buddhist pilgrimage site. Visitors walk the covered stairways barefoot. Climbing its rock faces would be disrespectful and is not a recreational activity.
- The Irrawaddy is a wide commercial river with strong currents and heavy boat traffic, and there are no recreational rafting or kayak rentals on it.
- Hot air ballooning has been associated with Bagan, which is a separate destination several hours away. Its status is also unconfirmed.
Mandalay is better described as a heritage and craft city than as an outdoor sports destination. Drone attacks, checkpoints and curfews make unsupervised outdoor travel in the surrounding countryside a particular risk.
