Travel advisory: Ethiopia is in an active conflict, with fighting in the north resumed in late September 2026. The UK FCDO advises against all travel to Tigray, Amhara and Gambela and to parts of Oromia, Afar and other regions, and the US State Department rates Ethiopia Level 3 (Reconsider Travel). Check the current UK FCDO and US State Department advice before you book and again before you fly. Addis Ababa itself is not in the FCDO’s advise-against list, but it warns of a high terrorism threat, crime hotspots including Meskel Square, Bole and Entoto, and security checkpoints.

🏔 Hiking & Trekking

  • Entoto Mountain: A starting point for hikers, offering views of the city and the surrounding landscape. The UK FCDO names Entoto as a crime hotspot and a driver-service guide reports walkers robbed on quiet stretches, so go by car or with a guide, in daytime and in company. The mountaintop is home to the Entoto Maryam Church.

  • Menagesha Suba Forest: About 40 km from Addis Ababa in the Finfine special zone, protected since the mid-15th century. It lies beside West Shewa and the A4 corridor that the FCDO flags, so check the current advisory and ask a licensed operator before you go.

🌊 Water Sports

  • Lake Hora, Bishoftu: Addis Ababa has no natural lakes or recreational rivers. The Bishoftu crater lakes lie about 48 to 62 km southeast on the Addis-Adama Expressway, and Lake Hora is known for boating and bird life. Stay on that corridor, and do not go on to Adama or Awash.

🏔 Mountain Biking

  • Entoto Natural Park: The park has bike paths, and cycling on Bole Road is not advised: it is a six-lane arterial, and the FCDO warns that driving standards are poor and accidents frequent. Go by car to the park in daytime and in company.

🐫 Rock Climbing

  • Climbing at Entoto: Kuriftu Entoto Adventure Park runs a climbing wall, rope courses, zipline and archery, charged per activity. Go by car in daytime.

🌳 Paragliding

  • Paragliding is not available from Addis Ababa. Gondar is in Amhara, where the UK FCDO advises against all travel.
