Travel advisory: Ethiopia is in an active conflict, with fighting in the north resumed in late September 2026. The UK FCDO advises against all travel to Tigray, Amhara and Gambela and to parts of Oromia, Afar and other regions, and the US State Department rates Ethiopia Level 3 (Reconsider Travel). Check the current UK FCDO and US State Department advice before you book and again before you fly. Addis Ababa itself is not in the FCDO’s advise-against list, but it warns of a high terrorism threat, crime hotspots including Meskel Square, Bole and Entoto, and security checkpoints. This guide covers Addis Ababa and the Bishoftu corridor only; the northern historic sites are not currently visitable.

Explore the lakes and heritage sites around Addis Ababa on the corridors that the UK FCDO does not advise against. The Blue Nile Gorge (Tis Issat), Bahir Dar and Lake Tana are in Amhara, where the FCDO advises against all travel, and Debre Libanos and Ankober lie in North Shewa, where it advises against all or all but essential travel, so none of them is a day-trip option. Awash National Park is beyond the Addis-Adama Expressway corridor, and the FCDO flags attacks on vehicles on the A1. Hire a licensed driver and check the current advice before each trip.

1. Bishoftu (Debre Zeit) Crater Lakes

• Distance from Addis Ababa: about 48 to 62 km (1 to 1.5 hours by car)
• Highlights: Lake Hora, Lake Bishoftu, Bishoftu Guda and Kuriftu
• Activities: Boat trips, birdwatching, lakeside lunch

Bishoftu sits on the Addis-Adama Expressway, a stretch the FCDO exempts from its advice against travel in East Shewa. Lake Hora is known for boating and bird life. Stay on the expressway corridor and do not go on to Adama or Awash.

2. Kuriftu Resort & Spa, Bishoftu

• Distance from Addis Ababa: about 48 to 62 km (1 to 1.5 hours by car)
• Highlights: Lakeside setting, spa, water park
• Activities: Relaxing by the lake, spa treatments

The resort has a water park that was reported to have opened in 2020. A day-pass price is not published, so ask the resort before you go.

3. Entoto Maryam Church and Museum

• Distance from Addis Ababa: north of the city, by car
• Highlights: The church where Menelik II was crowned in 1889, and a museum of belongings of Menelik II and Empress Taytu
• Activities: Visiting historical sites, views over the city

The FCDO names Entoto as a crime hotspot, so go by car in daytime and in company, and avoid quiet paths on foot.

4. Menagesha Suba Forest

• Distance from Addis Ababa: about 40 km
• Highlights: Forest protected since the mid-15th century
• Activities: Forest walks, photography

Menagesha Suba is in the Finfine special zone. It lies beside West Shewa and the A4 corridor that the FCDO flags, so check the current advisory and ask a licensed operator before you go.

5. Tiya Stelae Field

• Distance from Addis Ababa: about 85 km south along the Butajira road
• Highlights: Carved stelae in a UNESCO World Heritage Site
• Activities: Visiting historical sites, photography

The Butajira road runs near the Gurage zone, where the FCDO notes unrest. Check the current advisory and ask a licensed operator before you go.
