Travel Etiquette Tips for Tourists in Abu Dhabi, UAE
Dress Code
- Modesty is important: Men should wear long trousers and women should cover their shoulders and knees while out in public.
- Swimwear is allowed only at the beach or designated pool areas.
- When visiting mosques or other religious sites, modest clothing is required for both men and women.
Cultural Etiquette
- Greetings: A firm handshake is common for greeting men. Women should wait to be offered a handshake by a woman or may choose to greet with a light wave of the hand over the hearts.
- Politeness: Address others using their titles and last names if known, showing respect and politeness.
- Gifts: Small gifts are appreciated but avoid alcohol or pork products as they are forbidden in Islam.
General Etiquette
- Photography: Always ask permission before taking someone’s photo. Respect local customs and do not photograph government buildings or military sites without permission.
- Public Displays of Affection (PDA): PDA is discouraged in public places.
- Tipping: Service charge is usually included in the bill at restaurants, but tipping is appreciated. Round up to the nearest AED if service was good.
- Business Etiquette: Punctuality is expected and business attire is appropriate. Use both hands when giving or receiving objects as one hand is considered impolite.
- Ramadan: Respect the holy month of Ramadan by not eating, drinking or smoking in public during daylight hours.
- Alcohol Consumption: Alcohol can only be consumed in licensed premises and it’s illegal to drink in public or drive under the influence.
