A Multi-Day Kuala Lumpur Itinerary
Three days covers Kuala Lumpur’s city core comfortably; a fourth and fifth day, spent in Melaka overnight, rounds it out without adding a rushed extra city to the itinerary.
Day 1: towers and skyline
Time your Petronas Twin Towers slot for morning or sunset, booking 3-6 weeks ahead through eticket.petronastwintowers.com.my ; non-Malaysian weekday tickets run RM 127, weekend RM 137, and the towers close Mondays. The visit covers both the Skybridge on levels 41-42 and the Observation Deck on level 86. Walk through KLCC Park afterward, cross the elevated skybridge to Bukit Bintang, and end the day up Menara KL’s Sky Deck before dinner along Jalan Alor. Day 2: heritage and faith
Morning in Chinatown: Sri Mahamariamman Temple, Sin Sze Si Ya Temple and the murals at Kwai Chai Hong, then Central Market for batik at fixed prices. Walk the River of Life boardwalk to Masjid Jamek, and photograph the Sultan Abdul Samad Building from Merdeka Square. In the afternoon, the Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia (RM 20) rewards an hour or two, and Thean Hou Temple is worth the sunset for its skyline view and red lanterns. Finish with banana-leaf rice in Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur’s Little India, at Vishal Food & Catering or Sri Nirwana Maju.
Day 3: caves and the federal capital
An early KTM Komuter to Batu Caves (RM 2.60, 30-35 minutes) beats both the heat and the crowds; the Tamil Hindu shrine’s Cathedral Cave is free to enter, and modest dress is required for the 272 steps. In the afternoon, KLIA Transit reaches Putrajaya in 18 minutes (RM 14) for the pink Putra Mosque and a lake gondola cruise. Close the day with rooftop drinks looking back at the illuminated towers.
Days 4-5: Melaka overnight
An express bus from Terminal Bersepadu Selatan reaches Melaka Sentral in about 2 hours (RM 10-15), bookable through easybook.com ; there’s no railway station in town, so the bus is the direct option. Check into a shophouse hotel along the Malacca River, browse options on Agoda , and spend the afternoon and evening at Dutch Square, St. Paul’s Hill, A Famosa and the Jonker Street night market. On day 5, visit the Baba & Nyonya Heritage Museum and Cheng Hoon Teng Temple before the return bus to KL Sentral or straight to KLIA.
The verdict
