4 Great Wall Sections, Not One Wall
“The Great Wall” isn’t a single day trip. It’s four, with different prices, distances and crowd levels, and picking on autopilot usually means picking wrong.
Badaling is the default, and that’s the problem
Closest at 60 to 73 kilometers, reachable by a 20 to 30 minute bullet train to Badaling Great Wall Station, CNY 40 peak or CNY 35 low. Closest also means most tour-bus-heavy, by a wide margin. Public bus 877 now leaves mainly from Beitucheng Metro Station, not the old Deshengmen stop, and fake-uniformed touts at either location will claim the bus is cancelled to push you toward an overpriced private van. It isn’t cancelled. Beijing’s transport notices confirm the relocation if you want it in writing before you argue with a tout.
Mutianyu is the one to actually pick
About 70 kilometers and 90 minutes out, restored, moderately crowded, CNY 45 to enter, with a cable car up and a 1,580-meter toboggan back down. This is the section that balances effort against payoff better than any of the other three, which is why it’s the default recommendation everywhere except this list, where Badaling gets that slot by habit rather than merit. Jinshanling costs more and delivers more
At 130 kilometers and 2 to 2.5 hours, Jinshanling runs CNY 65 peak or CNY 55 low, plus CNY 60 for the cable car. The extra cost buys a partly-unrestored, thin-crowd stretch of wall that Badaling’s convenience can’t match at any price.
Simatai is the only one open after dark
CNY 40 to enter plus a CNY 40 night-visit supplement, the sole Great Wall section with an official after-dark visit, next to the rebuilt Gubei Water Town. A combo ticket covering both runs roughly CNY 180 to 220.
Ming Tombs and Tianjin deserve their own day
Tour operators cram the Ming Tombs, CNY 60 peak or CNY 20 low, into the same day as Badaling or Mutianyu, which shortchanges both. Tianjin, a 30-minute bullet train for CNY 55 to 70, is a genuinely standalone day covering the Italian Style Town, the Five Great Avenues and the Tianjin Eye. Book through 12306.cn .
Don’t skip the air quality check
Winter, December through February, is the season most likely to turn a full day on the wall hazy, typical AQI readings of 50 to 150 with occasional spikes past 200. Check a real-time app like aqicn.org or IQAir the morning of the trip rather than treating haze as an unavoidable given.
The verdict
Default to Mutianyu unless a specific reason points elsewhere: Jinshanling for solitude, Simatai for the night visit, Badaling only if the bullet-train convenience outweighs the crowds.
