Universal Studios Japan
Universal Studios Japan, Osaka: How to Actually Get On Rides
Universal Studios Japan opened in 2001 and is one of the highest-attended theme parks in Asia. Unlike most of the sightseeing in Osaka – the castle, the markets, the street food – this is a day of commercial spectacle. That is not a criticism; USJ executes the theme park experience at a genuinely high standard, and certain areas of the park are more impressive than their equivalents at other Universal parks. The park is also in the middle of a 25th anniversary celebration starting March 2026, with new seasonal attractions.
The only viable strategy at USJ is to be at the entrance when it opens. Most significant rides reach 120-minute queues by 11am on busy days. You either arrive early or you spend the day queuing.
Wizarding World of Harry Potter
The Harry Potter area is the most convincingly built section of the park. Hogsmeade village is to the correct scale, Hogwarts Castle looms at the end of the main street, and Butterbeer (non-alcoholic sweet cream soda with a butterscotch foam top) is available at the Three Broomsticks and throughout the area. The main ride, Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, is a well-executed indoor flight simulation through the castle. Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure remains the park’s most in-demand single attraction.
This area fills quickly. Being at the Hogsmeade entrance as the park opens allows rides on both Harry Potter attractions before the crowds build. Do not waste the first 90 minutes of the day anywhere else.
Super Nintendo World
Super Nintendo World opened in 2021 and expanded in December 2024 to include the Donkey Kong Country zone with a new roller coaster. The centrepiece is a Mario Kart ride incorporating physical motion, mixed reality goggles, and a tracking system that scores points through the course. Entry to Super Nintendo World requires a separate timed-entry ticket within the standard admission; these are allocated on entry and fill within the first hour. Get yours immediately upon entering the park.
Universal Cool Japan 2026
USJ’s seasonal showcase brings Japanese franchises into the park with limited-time attractions. Running through 2026: Detective Conan experiences (through June 30), Jujutsu Kaisen: The Real 4-D (through August 18), and Frieren-themed attractions starting May 30 through January 2027. These are genuinely popular with Japanese visitors and add significant queue pressure to the park’s most popular areas during their run.
Express Pass
USJ sells Express Passes allowing one ride on designated attractions without standard queuing. Prices run around JPY 4,000 to 10,000 depending on date and coverage. Express Pass 7 – covering the highest-demand rides – is the safest choice for first-time visitors on peak season days. On quiet weekdays they are less necessary but the difference between a queue of 30 minutes and 2 hours for Flying Dinosaur (the inverted flying coaster that consistently posts the park’s longest queues) can determine whether you actually enjoy the day.
Tickets and Access
Standard 1-day admission uses dynamic pricing and runs approximately JPY 9,400 to 10,800. Book online up to 60 days in advance; tickets go on sale at midnight Japan time and popular dates sell out. The park is accessible from central Osaka by the JR Sakurajima Line in 12 to 15 minutes from Namba or Osaka stations. JR pass holders cannot use the pass for this line; buy an IC card or separate ticket.
Where to Stay
Most USJ visitors base themselves in central Osaka (Namba, Shinsaibashi, Umeda), 15 to 20 minutes by rail, which gives access to far more interesting surrounding neighbourhoods for evenings. The official on-site hotels offer early park entry as a benefit – worth considering if you are visiting during a peak period and early morning crowd advantage matters.
