The Panama Canal: How It Actually Works

Most visitors watch a ship pass through the Miraflores Locks without understanding why the canal needs locks at all, or what the yellow electric locomotives running alongside the ship are actually doing. How the Locks Work
The canal is 82km long, ocean to ocean, and the core problem it solves is elevation, not distance. Ships do not cross at sea level; they are raised roughly 26 meters to Gatún Lake, an artificial reservoir that forms the canal’s summit, then lowered back down on the far side. Three original lock complexes from 1914 do the lifting: Gatún, on the Caribbean side, with three chambers, and Pedro Miguel and Miraflores together on the Pacific side.
The whole system is gravity fed. Water flows downhill from Gatún Lake into each chamber to raise a ship, then drains out again to lower the next one; there are no pumps. The electric locomotives on the lock walls, known as mules, do not tow the ship at all. The ship moves under its own engine power; the mules run on cog rails and use cables to keep it centered in a chamber with only a little clearance on either side. A full ocean to ocean transit takes roughly 8 to 10 hours.
The French Failure
Ferdinand de Lesseps, fresh off building the Suez Canal, started the Panama project in 1881 with a sea level design, no locks, copied directly from Suez. Panama’s terrain and climate were nothing like Egypt’s. Mudslides collapsed the excavation repeatedly, and yellow fever and malaria killed workers faster than the company could replace them; more than 22,000 people died before the French company went bankrupt in 1889. The project was written off as impossible.
The American Build
The United States bought the French rights and equipment in 1904 and switched to the lock based design still in use today. The precondition for finishing the canal at all was medical, not engineering: Dr. William Gorgas ran a mosquito control campaign that broke the yellow fever and malaria epidemics that had doomed the French effort. Construction ran from 1904 to 1914, and the canal opened on 15 August 1914 with the SS Ancon making the first official transit.
From US Control to Panamanian Control
The canal and the surrounding Canal Zone stayed under US control for over 60 years after opening. The Torrijos-Carter Treaties, signed 7 September 1977, set out a gradual handover; full transfer of the canal to Panama took effect at noon on 31 December 1999, and it has been run since by the Panama Canal Authority, the ACP, a Panamanian government agency.
The 2016 Expansion
The original locks could not fit the largest modern container ships, so a third lane opened on 26 June 2016: Agua Clara Locks on the Caribbean side and Cocolí Locks on the Pacific side, built for Neopanamax vessels roughly double the size the 1914 locks handle. It roughly doubled the canal’s cargo capacity without touching the original lock chambers, which still operate exactly as they did in 1914.
A drought in 2023 and 2024 forced the canal authority to cut daily transits for a period, a real logistical event for global shipping at the time; it had fully resolved by 2025 and has no bearing on a canal visit today, so treat it as history rather than a current planning concern.

None of this requires an engineering background to appreciate in person; watching a ship inch through a chamber with barely any room on either side makes the numbers above feel real in a way reading them does not.
