Salar De Uyuni Bolivia
NASA used the Salar de Uyuni to calibrate a satellite. The salt flat’s surface is so vast and so nearly flat that it served as a benchmark for instruments on Earth-observing satellites tasked with measuring ice sheets and sea levels, because scientists needed a reference surface that could be trusted. The slight imperfections in the flatness, caused by minute variations in the local gravity field, were themselves scientifically useful. That is a slightly unusual distinction for a tourist destination: too large and too flat to have any practical use other than science and photography.
The Salar covers 10,582 square kilometres in the southwestern Bolivian altiplano at 3,653 metres above sea level. It formed from the drying of prehistoric lakes that existed here around 40,000 years ago. The hexagonal salt patterns on the surface form through evaporation and the internal stress of the crust contracting in dry heat. The salt crust itself is only 3 to 10 metres thick, considerably thinner than comparable salt flats in Chile. Beneath it sits the world’s largest known lithium deposit, concentrated in a blue-green brine enriched by ancient volcanic activity. Estimates of the reserve vary between 5 and 23 million tonnes of lithium depending on the methodology, representing a significant fraction of global supply. Extraction has been technically difficult because of unusually high magnesium concentrations in the brine and the region’s wet climate, so the economic promise has remained largely unrealised.
The mirror effect and when to visit
The photographs that have made the Salar famous globally, where the sky appears to reflect perfectly off the surface creating a seamless horizon, happen during the wet season between December and April. A thin layer of rainwater over the salt acts as a mirror. The effect is strongest from late January through March.
This is also when access can become difficult. Heavy flooding can make sections of the flat impassable by vehicle, and tours are occasionally cancelled or rerouted after extreme rain. The trade-off is not nothing: you are choosing between the photograph and the certainty of being able to get out there at all.
The dry season from May through November offers clear white geometric patterns, dramatic volcanoes rising from the altiplano, and stable travel conditions. June through August is peak season with more tourists but also more reliable tour availability. September through November is arguably the optimal month range: good weather, lower crowds, and a richer variety of coloured lagoons and geothermal features that appear more vivid before the rains.
Tours and logistics
Almost everyone visits the Salar on an organised tour departing from the town of Uyuni, which sits about an hour from the salt flat’s eastern edge. Standard three-day tours covering the salt flat itself, the Train Cemetery, Incahuasi Island (a cactus-covered island at the flat’s centre with fossil coral formations), the Sol de Manana geyser field, Laguna Colorada (a red lake coloured by algae and rich in flamingos), and the series of coloured lagoons to the south cost between 150 and 280 USD per person including accommodation and meals. Budget versions sleep in basic desert huts; mid-range tours use better-equipped camps and occasionally salt hotels.
One-day tours to the flat itself cost 30 to 50 USD and cover the main photogenic areas without the southern lagoons circuit. If the mirror effect is your primary reason for being there, a one-day tour during wet season can achieve what you came for.
Tours can also be done in the other direction: starting from San Pedro de Atacama in Chile and crossing the border to Bolivia, combining the southern circuit with an entry into the altiplano. This costs around 350 USD and is popular with travellers arriving from the Chilean side.
Book at least two to three weeks in advance during peak season (June to August and December to February). Reputable agencies in Uyuni include Red Planet Expeditions, Hidalgo Tours, and Extreme Fun Tours; prices are similar across the main operators and quality is better differentiated by vehicle age and guide language than by brand. Ask specifically whether tours use 4WD vehicles with recent maintenance records.
Getting to Uyuni
Uyuni is reached from La Paz by overnight bus (approximately eight hours, arriving early morning) or by daily flights on Boliviana de Aviacion. The flight takes around 45 minutes and costs approximately 130 USD one way, which is considerably more than the bus but saves a night’s travel. Both options connect to Uyuni’s small town centre, where tour agencies cluster along the main streets near the train station.
La Paz itself sits at 3,600 metres. If you are flying directly from sea level, at least one full acclimatisation day in La Paz before continuing to Uyuni is strongly advisable. Altitude sickness at this elevation is not unusual and is not a measure of fitness. Soroche pills are sold over the counter across Bolivia at low cost. Coca tea is a traditional local remedy and is offered in most guesthouses. Drink more water than you think necessary, avoid alcohol in the first day or two, and ascend gradually if your itinerary allows.
Accommodation
Uyuni town has a concentration of budget hostels and a few mid-range hotels adequate for a base before and after tours. The most distinctive accommodation option is a salt hotel: Palacio de Sal near the salt flat’s edge is the most established, built almost entirely from salt blocks. It is more expensive than town options but puts you at the edge of the flat at dawn and dusk, which is particularly valuable during mirror season. Book well in advance if visiting in July or January to February.
What to see beyond the flat
Incahuasi Island in the centre of the salt flat rises from the surface covered in giant cacti (some over a thousand years old) and offers a panoramic view across the white expanse in every direction. Entry costs around 30 bolivianos in addition to tour fees.
Laguna Colorada, a shallow red-algae lake at 4,278 metres in the Eduardo Avaroa Andean Fauna Reserve, holds flamingo colonies in the tens of thousands. It is accessible only on the three-day circuit. The reserve also contains Laguna Verde (coloured by arsenic and copper minerals) at the base of Volcan Licancabur, and the Sol de Manana geyser field, where sulphur vents and boiling mud reach 80 degrees Celsius and are best visited at dawn when activity is highest.
The Train Cemetery at the edge of Uyuni town is a field of rusting 19th and early 20th century locomotives and carriages abandoned when the mining economy collapsed. It is a free attraction and genuinely interesting as industrial archaeology, not just a photo backdrop.
Practical notes
Altitude and UV radiation are the two physical realities that catch unprepared visitors out. The reflective salt surface intensifies sun exposure significantly; sunscreen (factor 50), sunglasses, and a hat are not optional. Night temperatures drop well below zero even in summer at this altitude. Tour vehicles and desert camps are heated but not uniformly well. Bringing an insulating layer beyond what you think you need is better than the alternative.
The Salar sits in the western time zone (UTC-4), and sunrise over the flat happens early. Many tour operators time the first morning drive to arrive at the flat during the golden hour shortly after dawn, which is the single best window for photography in both wet and dry seasons.
