Carlsbad Caverns National Park New Mexico
Carlsbad Caverns National Park
Every evening from late spring through October, roughly 400,000 Mexican free-tailed bats spiral out of the natural entrance of Carlsbad Cavern in a column that takes 30 minutes to empty. The bat flight program, held at the amphitheater near the cave mouth, is free. A ranger talks about bat biology while the flight builds in the darkening sky. You are not allowed to bring any electronic device – no phones, no cameras of any kind – because the light and electromagnetic interference disturbs the bats. So you just watch. The best flights normally occur August and September when the young have joined the colony. It is one of the few wildlife spectacles in North America where you are genuinely required to be present rather than documenting it.
Fees and Entry
Park entry: $15 per person (ages 16+); under-16s free. The America the Beautiful Annual Pass covers entry. As of 2026, non-US residents aged 16+ at Carlsbad Caverns pay an additional $100 surcharge. A $1 timed entry reservation fee applies separately from the entrance fee; reserve at recreation.gov.
The cavern maintains a steady 13 degrees Celsius (56°F) with 90% humidity regardless of surface conditions. Bring a light jacket even in summer when surface temperatures exceed 40°C, and wear sturdy walking shoes.
The Big Room
The Big Room is the largest known natural limestone chamber in North America: roughly 4,000 feet long, 625 feet wide, ceiling reaching 255 feet at its highest. Early explorers lit smoky fires near the entrance just to see how far the chamber extended. Walking the paved 1.25-mile trail takes about 1-1.5 hours.
Getting Inside
Natural Entrance Trail: descends 750 feet on foot over about 1.25 miles through increasingly elaborate formations. The more rewarding approach; takes 1-2 hours at a comfortable pace.
Elevator: drops you directly 750 feet to the Big Room level – practical for anyone with mobility concerns or limited time.
Ranger-led tours go deeper into the cave system. The King’s Palace tour ($10 adults, $5 children 4-15) is the most accessible and covers four ornately decorated chambers. Due to staffing shortages, tickets are first-come, first-served at the visitor centre from 9am; they sell out quickly.
Practical Notes
No electronic devices at the bat flight program – this is a hard rule, enforced. Leave your phone in your car and accept that this is a memory rather than content.
The nearest town with lodging is Carlsbad, about 30 km northeast. Whites City immediately outside the park entrance has basic motel accommodation.
Beyond the Cave
Rattlesnake Springs, 10 km from the main visitor centre, is one of the best birding spots in New Mexico with over 300 species recorded. The Chihuahuan Desert surface above the caverns is worth an hour of walking even if the cave is the main draw.
