Animal Kingdom Disney World Orlando
Disney’s Animal Kingdom
Animal Kingdom changed significantly in early 2026 when DinoLand U.S.A. permanently closed in February to make way for Tropical Americas, a new land featuring an Encanto-themed ride, an Indiana Jones adventure, and a Disney animal carousel. As of mid-2026, Tropical Americas is under construction and DinoLand is gone. If you visit before the new land opens, that corner of the park is a construction zone. The replacement should be worth the wait; DinoLand was widely considered the weakest land in any Disney park.
What remains is strong. Animal Kingdom is the only Disney theme park where the animals are the primary attraction, not the backdrop, and when Kilimanjaro Safaris delivers, which it usually does, you drive past giraffes, zebras, lions, and elephants at a distance that does not feel staged. The 580-acre park holds around 2,000 animals across 300 species, and the management of the animal habitats, while rightly debated by conservationists, is done with more genuine care than most theme park operators apply to anything.
What to Prioritise
Avatar Flight of Passage in Pandora remains the most popular attraction in the park and requires a Lightning Lane Single Pass purchase if you don’t want to wait 90-plus minutes in the Florida heat. The ride uses motion simulation and 3D technology to simulate riding a mountain banshee through Pandora’s bioluminescent landscape. It is genuinely the best theme park ride in Florida and, in the opinion of many regulars, anywhere. Buy the Single Pass as early as you can.
Kilimanjaro Safaris is a 20-minute open-air vehicle ride through a large naturalistic habitat. Morning game drives produce the most animal activity; by midday most animals are resting. Use Lightning Lane Multi Pass to avoid the queue.
Na’vi River Journey in Pandora is a short, gentle boat ride through the bioluminescent forest. Families with young children should prioritise this early; it books up on Multi Pass quickly.
Zootopia: Better Zoogether! opened in November 2025 in the former Tree of Life theatre, replacing It’s Tough to Be a Bug!. The 3D film experience is good but not exceptional; worth seeing if the queue is short.
Festival of the Lion King is a Broadway-style stage show with acrobatics, fire effects, and live music. The 30-minute performance runs multiple times daily in Africa. No queue system; arrive 15-20 minutes before the show.
Lightning Lane Strategy
Animal Kingdom is generally easier to navigate than Magic Kingdom or Hollywood Studios. You can pre-select three Lightning Lane Multi Pass attractions from 7 days ahead (Disney Resort guests) or 3 days ahead (all other guests). There are no tiers, so pick any three. Prioritise Na’vi River Journey first (books out fastest), then Kilimanjaro Safaris, then Expedition Everest.
For the single pass, Flight of Passage is the only attraction worth purchasing separately.
Eating
Satu’li Canteen in Pandora is the best quick-service restaurant in the park: build-your-own bowls with rice, quinoa, and a choice of protein, consistently better than theme park food has any right to be. The Bioluminescent dessert (a colourful mousse cake) is overdone but the mains are legitimately good.
Tusker House in Africa is an all-you-can-eat character dining experience for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Good food, character meet-and-greets included; book via the Disney World app.
Flame Tree Barbecue by the Discovery River is the best outdoor seating in the park: a waterside counter-service location with decent smoked meats and the best view of the Tree of Life.
Where to Stay
Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge is the obvious choice: the hotel overlooks a private African savanna with genuinely free-roaming giraffes, zebras, and flamingos visible from the rooms and the lobby bar at dawn and dusk. Rooms from around $350-600 per night. The savanna-view rooms are worth the premium.
Disney’s All-Star Resorts (Movies, Music, Sports) are the budget option at around $100-150 per night, with Disney transportation included. The rooms are small and the theme is aggressively loud, but the location and transport access work.
Practical Notes
The Florida heat in Animal Kingdom is more intense than at Magic Kingdom or Hollywood Studios because large portions of the park are outdoors and less shaded. Arrive at park opening, do Flight of Passage first, then Kilimanjaro Safaris, take shelter from noon to 3pm, and return to the trails and shows in the afternoon. Hydrate aggressively.
The My Disney Experience app handles Lightning Lane purchases and shows wait times in real time. Download and set up before arrival, not in the parking lot.
