5-Day Itinerary for Exploring Turkey
Day 1: Istanbul (Arrival & Exploration)
- Arrival: Fly into Istanbul Ataturk Airport or Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen International Airport. Be aware of the visa requirements, as most nationalities need a visa to enter Turkey. Check the latest information on the Turkish eVisa website.
- Activities: Visit the iconic Hagia Sophia and Blue Mosque, stroll through the historic Sultanahmet District and experience the Grand Bazaar, one of the oldest and largest markets in the world.
- Things to know: Turkish Lira (TRY) is the official currency, and ATMs are widely available throughout Turkey. Istanbul is a bustling city with a rich history; be mindful of your belongings.
- Transportation: The easiest way to get around in Istanbul is by tram, bus, metro or taxi. Istanbulkart is the preferred travel card for public transport.
Day 2: Istanbul (Continuation)
- Activities: Spend the morning at the Topkapi Palace, explore the Basilica Cistern and Taksim Square. In the evening, take a ferry ride to see the Bosphorus Strait and the beautiful Asian side of Istanbul.
- Things to know: The Bosphorus Strait divides Istanbul into Europe (where most of the main tourist sites are located) and Asia. A ferry ride is a must for stunning views!
Day 3: Cappadocia
- Transportation: Take an early morning flight or bus to Cappadocia (Kayseri Erkilet Airport or Nevşehir Kapadokya Airport). Alternatively, opt for a scenic overnight train ride.
- Activities: Explore the unique rock formations and fairy chimneys of Göreme National Park, take a hot air balloon tour at sunrise, and visit the underground cities of Derinkuyu or Kaymakli.
- Things to know: Cappadocia is famous for its hot air balloon rides, but it can be quite chilly in the early morning, so dress warmly!
Day 4: Pamukkale & Hierapolis
- Transportation: Rent a car or take a guided tour to visit Pamukkale and Hierapolis. The journey takes around 2 hours from Cappadocia.
- Activities: Marvel at the stunning white travertines of Pamukkale, swim in the thermal pools and explore the ancient city of Hierapolis, including the Necropolis, the Theater, and the Temple of Apollo.
- Things to know: Be prepared for a lot of walking on uneven terrain at the travertines, and pack a swimming suit if you want to bathe in the thermal pools.
Day 5: Ephesus & Izmir
- Transportation: Drive or take a guided tour to Ephesus (around 2 hours from Pamukkale). In the afternoon, visit Izmir (approximately 1 hour from Ephesus).
- Activities: Discover the ancient ruins of Ephesus and the House of Virgin Mary, and explore the vibrant city of Izmir. Don’t miss Kadifekale (Celikkale), a castle ruin overlooking the city.
- Things to know: Be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes for exploring Ephesus’ extensive ruins. Also, Izmir has a lively nightlife scene if you want to spend your last evening in Turkey partying!
