Day 1: Arrival & Fafana Island Exploration

  • Morning: Arrive at Hoinini Airport, followed by registration at the Administrative Office.
  • Afternoon: Head to Fafana Island, home to most of Tokelau’s residents. Visit the local school, church, and community center to immerse yourself in the local culture.
  • Evening: Enjoy a traditional Tokelauan dinner at a local family’s house. Don’t forget to try the staple dish: ‘Poisson cru’, a raw fish marinated in coconut milk.
  • Things to know: The official language is Tokelauan and English, but you might find it difficult to communicate as few residents speak English.

Day 2: Atafu Island Expedition

  • Morning: Travel to Atafu Island by traditional outrigger canoe (vaka) or by plane. Visit the Atamai Lodge for accommodation and meals if needed.
  • Afternoon: Tour the island, visit the lighthouse, and learn about the history of Atafu as a navigational guidepost for early Polynesians.
  • Evening: Attend the kava ceremony, a traditional Tokelauan social event where kava (a peppery drink) is shared among participants to promote unity and goodwill.

Day 3: Nukunonu Island Adventure

  • Morning: Travel to Nukunonu Island by vaka or plane. Visit the Administrative Office, school, and church.
  • Afternoon: Explore the island, swim in the crystal-clear waters, and snorkel among vibrant marine life.
  • Evening: Spend time with locals, learn about their daily lives, and enjoy a homemade dinner.

Day 4: Fishing & Beach Relaxation

  • Morning: Join the local fishermen for a fishing trip using traditional methods. Learn about the importance of fishing in Tokelauan culture.
  • Afternoon: Spend the rest of the day relaxing on beautiful beaches, sunbathing, swimming, and enjoying the tranquil atmosphere.
  • Evening: Partake in another kava ceremony or enjoy a quiet evening under the stars.

Day 5: Departure & Souvenirs

  • Morning/Afternoon: Depending on your departure schedule, spend time shopping for souvenirs such as handicrafts, t-shirts, and traditional mats.
  • Before Departure: Visit the Administrative Office to say goodbye and thank the locals for their hospitality.
  • Departure: Board your plane or vaka and bid farewell to this unique Polynesian nation.

  • Transportation: The best way to travel between the islands is by traditional outrigger canoe (vaka). Alternatively, there are regular flights available.
