Tibet 6-Day Itinerary (Markdown Format)

Day 1: Arrival in Lhasa

  • Flight/Train to Gonggar Airport or Tibet Railway Station.
  • Transport to Lhasa by coach or private vehicle.
  • Acclimatize and rest. It’s important to adjust to the high altitude.
  • Explore the local neighborhood, Barkhor Street.
  • Visit Jokhang Temple in the evening for an authentic Tibetan Buddhist experience.

Day 2: Lhasa Sightseeing - Potala Palace & Norbulingka

  • Morning visit to the iconic Potala Palace, former winter residence of the Dalai Lama.
  • Afternoon exploration of Norbulingka, the summer palace of the Dalai Lama.
  • Learn about Tibetan art and culture at the Tibet Museum.

Day 3: Lhasa Sightseeing - Sera Monastery & Drepung Monastery

  • Morning visit to Sera Monastery, known for its debate sessions among monks.
  • Afternoon visit to Drepung Monastery, one of the largest monasteries in Tibet.
  • Explore Tibetan culture, art, and Buddhist philosophy at these monasteries.

Day 4: Lhasa to Gyantse & Shigatse

  • Early morning departure for Gyantse (approx. 90km).
  • Visit the Pelkor Chode Monastery and the Gyantse Kumbum, one of Tibet’s most stunning architectural wonders.
  • Afternoon drive to Shigatse (90km), the second largest city in Tibet.
  • Overnight stay in Shigatse.

Day 5: Shigatse to Tsetang & Yumbulagang Palace

  • Morning visit to Tashilhunpo Monastery, the seat of the Panchen Lama.
  • Afternoon drive to Tsetang (90km).
  • Explore Yumbulagang Palace, the first palace in Tibet.
  • Overnight stay in Tsetang.

Day 6: Return to Lhasa & Departure

  • Morning return journey to Lhasa (170km).
  • Rest and shopping at Barkhor Street or other local markets.
  • Transfer to Gonggar Airport/Tibet Railway Station for departure.

Things to Know:

  • Altitude sickness is common, so it’s important to stay hydrated and rest adequately.
  • Internet access may be limited, so consider purchasing a local SIM card or bringing a portable Wi-Fi device.
  • Respect local customs and traditions, including dress codes at monasteries.
  • Photography may be prohibited in certain areas, so always ask permission first.

Visa Requirements:

  • A Chinese Tourist Visa is required for most nationalities, plus a Tibet Travel Permit.
  • The Tibet Travel Permit can only be obtained through a local travel agency in China.

Transportation:

  • Flights to Lhasa operate from several major cities in China.
  • Trains to Lhasa are also available, offering a unique experience but taking longer than flying.
  • Local transportation within Tibet is usually by coach or private vehicle.
