Suriname 7-Day Travel Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival & Paramaribo City Exploration

  • Arrival at Johan Adolf Pengel International Airport (JAP)
  • Visa Requirements: Suriname offers visa-free travel for citizens of several countries, including the US and EU. Always check the latest requirements before your trip.
  • Transportation: Pre-arranged airport transfer or taxis are readily available at the airport.
  • Activities: Visit the historic inner city of Paramaribo, explore the Saint Peter and Paul Cathedral, Fort Zeelandia, and the Central Market. Enjoy local cuisine at a riverside restaurant.

Day 2: Paramaribo & Suriname Museum

  • Activities: Visit the Suriname Museum to learn about the country’s history and diverse cultures. Take a stroll along the Commewijne River, and explore the Peace Palace.
  • Evening: Relax at Brokopondo Lake or attend a live performance at the Antilla Music & Dance Institute.

Day 3: Brownsberg Nature Park

  • Transportation: Hire a guided tour or rent a car for the day.
  • Activities: Explore Brownsberg Nature Park, home to diverse wildlife and the highest point in Suriname. Don’t miss the stunning sunset view from the observation tower.

Day 4: Albina & Saramacca Region

  • Transportation: Private tours or chartered boats are recommended for this region.
  • Activities: Visit the Maroon villages in the Saramacca River area, learn about their culture and history, and enjoy a traditional meal.

Day 5: Nieuwe Nickerie & Galibi Turtle Beach

  • Transportation: Hire a car or join a guided tour.
  • Activities: Explore the village of Nieuwe Nickerie, and head to Galibi Turtle Beach to witness the green turtles laying their eggs (best from March to July).

Day 6: Nieuw Amsterdam & Suriname River

  • Transportation: Return to Paramaribo and prepare for departure at JAP.

Tips & Recommendations

  • Currency: The official currency is the Surinamese Dollar (SRD), although US dollars are often accepted in hotels and tour agencies.
  • Language: Dutch is the official language, but English is widely spoken in tourist areas.
  • Electricity: Socket type C and F are used in Suriname. Voltage is 127V.
  • Health: Yellow fever vaccination is required if you’re coming from a risk area. Always consult a travel clinic for the latest health advice.
