Sierra Leone 4-Day Travel Itinerary
Day 1: Freetown
- Morning: Arrival at Lungi International Airport. Transfer to Freetown (approximately 25 minutes by boat or 20 minutes by helicopter). Check-in at your hotel and freshen up.
- Afternoon: Visit the Cotton Tree, a historical site where the Sierra Leone Company was founded in 1787. Explore Lumley Beach and enjoy local cuisine at one of the beachfront restaurants.
- Evening: Take a stroll around Aberdeen Village, known for its vibrant nightlife.
- Things to know: Freetown is the capital city of Sierra Leone. English is widely spoken. The currency is the Leone (Le).
Day 2: Turtle Island and Bureh Beach
- Morning: Early departure for Turtle Islands. Enjoy a boat trip to witness sea turtles nesting (best from May to December).
- Afternoon: Return to Freetown in the afternoon. Head to Bureh Beach, about 1.5 hours drive from Freetown. Spend the rest of the day relaxing on the beach.
- Evening: Dine at a local restaurant and spend the night at a guest house or hotel near the beach.
Day 3: Bunce Island and Makeni
- Morning: Depart for Mattru Jong Wharf (approximately 2 hours from Freetown). Take a ferry to Bunce Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a rich history of the slave trade.
- Afternoon: Return to Mattru Jong Wharf and head to Makeni (approx. 1 hour drive), the second largest city in Sierra Leone. Visit the Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary.
- Evening: Dine at a local restaurant and spend the night at a hotel in Makeni.
Day 4: Gola Forest and Departure
- Morning: Depart for Gola National Park (approx. 2 hours from Makeni). Explore the rainforest, home to various primate species including chimpanzees.
- Afternoon: Return to Freetown for lunch. Prepare for your departure. Visit the Sierra Leone National Museum to learn more about the country’s history and culture before heading to Lungi International Airport for your flight back home.
