Sapporo 4 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)
Four days is our 3-day plan (Odori, Mt Moiwa, the Beer Museum, Maruyama) plus a full day trip to Otaru, the first day this trip has room for a genuine change of scenery. A ski or onsen day still needs 5 days minimum.
Book these before you go:
- Your Odori or Station-area hotel : the priority booking if any date lands in Snow Festival week (4-11 Feb 2026)
- Mt Moiwa Ropeway tickets : pre-book peak evening slots in winter
- An Otaru day tour : worth it if you’d rather not manage the JR timetable yourself

Traveling during Snow Festival week (4-11 Feb 2026)? Restructure Day 1 and Day 2 around it: Odori Park’s sculptures by day, Susukino’s illuminated ice after dark, on both days, and keep Days 3 and 4 (Beer Museum, Maruyama, Otaru) as planned.
Day 1: Odori, Susukino, and orientation
Fly into New Chitose and ride the JR Rapid Airport train , 37 minutes for 1,430 yen, into Sapporo Station. Base yourself near Odori or the Station, walk the park, and go up the TV Tower (800 yen) for an orientation view. Dinner is Susukino’s Ramen Yokocho alley, miso ramen since 1948, 900-1,300 yen a bowl, or soup curry at a shop tracing back to Ajanta’s 1971 original.
Day 2: Nijo Market and Mt Moiwa after dark
Kaisendon at Nijo Market in the morning, then whatever’s left of central Sapporo in the afternoon (Tanukikoji’s arcades, the Clock Tower if curiosity wins out). Time Mt Moiwa Ropeway (about 2,100 yen round trip) for 1-2 hours before sunset for the daylight-to-lights transition, one of Japan’s “New Three Major Night Views” and worth building the whole evening around.
Day 3: The Beer Museum and Maruyama
The Sapporo Beer Museum now charges 1,000 yen admission (since 1 July 2026, no longer free), but the tasting room and the Genghis Khan beer garden next door (2,000-3,500 yen for a casual grilled lamb set) still earn the visit. In the afternoon, Maruyama’s park, Hokkaido Jingu shrine, and zoo give you the quiet, green counterpoint to Odori/Susukino’s density.
Day 4: Otaru, the day trip that’s worth the train fare
Take the JR line from Sapporo, 30-40 minutes each way for about 800 yen, into Otaru, a canal-and-warehouse port town that looks nothing like Sapporo’s modern grid. The canal district is genuinely atmospheric before the coach groups arrive around mid-morning, and the streets behind it hold glass workshops (Otaru built its glassmaking tradition on fishing floats), music box shops, and sake breweries.
Is Otaru worth a full day, or just a quick add-on? A full day. The round trip alone is an hour-plus, and squeezing it into an afternoon after a morning of Sapporo sightseeing means rushing the one place on this itinerary that looks genuinely different from the rest of the trip. Have lunch in Otaru itself: the seafood here is priced by weight and every bit as good as Sapporo’s, without the Sapporo markup.
Take the evening train back and have a last dinner in Susukino, Genghis Khan if you haven’t had it yet, or a proper sit-down seafood dinner (3,000-6,000+ yen) now that you’ve compared Otaru’s market prices against Sapporo’s. Return to New Chitose the next morning via the same 37 minute JR Rapid Airport train.
