Santorini 2-Day Travel Itinerary

Day 1: Exploring Fira & Oia

Morning:

  • Start your day in Fira, the capital of Santorini.
  • Visit the Archaeological Museum and the Museum of Prehistoric Thera to learn about the island’s rich history.
  • Take a cable car down to Fira port and embark on a boat tour to the volcanic islands (Nea Kameni, Palea Kameni). This is a must-do activity in Santorini!

Afternoon:

  • Return to Fira and have lunch at Metaxi Mas (try their moussaka and local wine).
  • Take the bus or rent a scooter/car to travel to Oia.
  • Visit the Blue Domes for iconic Instagram photos, and wander through the narrow, picturesque streets of Oia.

Evening:

  • Have dinner at Amoudi Bay in Oia (reachable by a steep walk or by taxi). Fresh seafood is a must!
  • Watch the famous Santorini sunset from Oia’s castle ruins or the traditional windmills.

Day 2: Beaches & Red Beach

Morning:

  • Spend your morning at Perissa Beach, one of Santorini’s longest and most popular black sand beaches. Enjoy swimming, sunbathing, and water sports.
  • Have lunch at a beachfront taverna like Taverna Psychic or Lemonaria.

Afternoon:

  • Head to the Red Beach (Akrotiri) via Akrotiri village. The beach is small but stunning, with red cliffs and clear waters.
  • Continue your journey to Ancient Akrotiri, an archaeological site buried by volcanic ash. It offers a glimpse into the Bronze Age settlement that thrived before the eruption of the Minoan civilization’s most powerful volcano.

Evening:

  • Return to Fira or Oia and have dinner at your leisure. Some popular choices include Selene, 1800, and Candouni.
  • Spend your final evening shopping for souvenirs in the charming villages or simply relax while enjoying the island’s unique caldera views.

Things to know:

  • Santorini is primarily a car-free island, so walk whenever possible. Taxis and public buses are available but can be expensive and infrequent during peak season.
  • The sunsets in Oia and Fira are extremely popular, so arrive early to secure a good spot.
  • Dress codes are often enforced at restaurants, especially in Oia, with many requiring smart casual attire (no flip flops or shorts).
  • Greek tavernas typically serve dinner from around 7 pm onwards, so plan accordingly.

Transportation:

  • Bus: KTEL Santorini operates between Fira and the main towns and villages. Tickets can be purchased at the bus station in Fira or on the bus.
  • Taxi: Metered taxis are available but can be expensive, especially during peak season. It’s best to agree on a fare before starting your journey.
  • Car/Scooter rental: Renting a vehicle is a great way to explore the island at your own pace. Be aware of Santorini’s narrow and winding roads!
