Santiago 2 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)

Two days in Santiago de Chile covers the centro and one cerro, not a vineyard or the Andes, save those for our fuller Santiago guide or a region-focused trip. This one stays in the city: Plaza de Armas and Mercado Central on day one, Cerro San Cristobal and Bellavista on day two. Skip any two-day plan that also promises Valparaiso or a winery; the centro alone fills a day, and a rushed vineyard tour tacked onto a city break shortchanges both. Pack for a mild valley city near sea level, not a mountain town: Santiago sits around 520m, roughly Denver’s elevation, and you’ll pay in Chilean pesos (CLP), not euros.

Day 1: Centro Historico, Not a Day Trip Warmup

Start at Plaza de Armas, the cathedral and colonial-era buildings ringing Santiago’s original main square, free to walk. Head to Mercado Central for a seafood lunch, congrio or a ceviche among the market stalls; a sit-down table costs more than a counter stool but it’s the same catch either way. From there it’s a short walk to La Moneda, the presidential palace: free to view from Plaza de la Constitucion, with a free underground cultural center if you want out of the sun. Finish at Cerro Santa Lucia, also free to climb, for sunset over the centro with the Andes behind it on a clear day.

Day 2: San Cristobal by Funicular, Bellavista After Dark

Ride the funicular, not the teleferico, a separate ride from a different station, up Cerro San Cristobal from the Pio Nono entrance; a round trip runs roughly CLP 4,500-5,850 depending on the day of the week, see funicularonline.cl for current fares. At the summit: the giant Virgin Mary statue and a panoramic view of the city and the Andes without paying for Sky Costanera. Head down into Bellavista for dinner, bars, and street art, but treat after dark as a different neighborhood: this is where Santiago’s mugging risk concentrates (see below), so book a taxi or rideshare back rather than walking to your hotel late.

Is Santiago High Altitude?

No. Santiago sits around 520m, roughly Denver’s elevation, not the Andes. Skip the altitude prep that belongs to La Paz or Cusco; the only spot nearby where altitude genuinely matters is the El Yeso reservoir or the ski resorts higher in the mountains, both a separate day trip, not this city itinerary.

Is Bellavista Safe at Night?

Chile carries a US State Department Level 2 “exercise increased caution” advisory, and the UK Foreign Office describes muggings as frequent in Santiago, increasingly with weapons. Bellavista after dark, the centro around Plaza de Armas and Cerro Santa Lucia, and crowded metro cars at rush hour are where it concentrates; Providencia and Lastarria see far fewer incidents. Avoid any demonstration you run into, especially Friday evenings near Plaza Italia.

Funicular or Teleferico Up San Cristobal?

They’re two different rides from two different stations, not two names for one ride. The funicular from Pio Nono is the classic route and the one this itinerary uses; the teleferico is a cable car from the Oasis station near the Japanese garden. Both reach the summit and the Virgin Mary statue, so pick whichever station sits closer to your start point that day.

Before You Go

Two days isn’t enough for a wine or Andes day trip without cutting the city short.
