Saigon 6 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)
Six days is our 5-day plan plus a sixth day riding the metro out to Thu Duc, the newer riverside side of the city, still without leaving HCMC itself. Day 1: District 1 and the history that matters
War Remnants Museum (40,000 VND) and Reunification Palace (about 40,000 VND), Ben Thanh Market for orientation, dinner at the night-market ring.
Day 2: Jade Emperor Pagoda, Cholon, and one big view
Jade Emperor Pagoda, Cholon’s Binh Tay Market and Thien Hau Temple, one observation deck at dusk. Notre-Dame is exterior-only, closed to tourists since 2017.
Day 3: Museums, District 3 cafes, and the metro
Museum of Vietnamese History and the Fine Arts Museum, District 3’s villa-cafe streets, then Metro Line 1 out toward Thu Duc for the one corridor where it beats a Grab.
Day 4: A cooking class, deeper Cholon, and the river at night
A half-day cooking class, Cha Tam Church and Cholon’s wholesale streets, then a Saigon River evening cruise.
Day 5: The slow day
Tan Dinh’s pink church, Turtle Lake cafes, shopping over sightseeing, and an evening back at whichever spot from the first four days you liked best.
Day 6: Thu Duc and the riverside side of the city
Ride Metro Line 1 all the way out this time (6,000-20,000 VND, HURC’s own site has the current schedule); Thu Duc City, where Landmark 81 stands and the eastern stretch of the line runs, moves at a different pace than central District 1, newer, more riverside, more expat-leaning.
What’s actually worth doing in Thu Duc besides the tower?
An Phu’s riverside cafes and the pedestrian-friendly stretches around Vinhomes Central Park reward a slow afternoon walk, and if you skipped Landmark 81’s SkyView on day two, this is the natural day to do it instead, roughly 420,000-500,000 VND depending on weekday versus weekend.
Head back into District 1 for the evening. With six nights in, this is the day to pick a second market you haven’t done yet, An Dong Market’s clothing and fabric stalls are a reasonable change of pace from Ben Thanh and Binh Tay, or spend the night at a rooftop bar rather than another sightseeing stop. By day six most visitors have found one street-food stall they’d happily eat at twice; go back to it rather than chasing a new recommendation on a near-final night.
Before you go
Cross streets at a slow, steady pace and let traffic flow around you. Keep a bag on the shoulder facing away from the road; drive-by phone and bag snatching, not violent crime, is the real petty-crime risk here. Reconfirm your Grab pickup details and build in real traffic buffer to Tan Son Nhat, District 1 to the airport can run anywhere from 20 minutes to over an hour depending on time of day.
