Rwanda 4-Day Travel Itinerary (Markdown Format)

Day 1: Arrival & Kigali City Tour

  • Arrival at Kigali International Airport (KGL)

    • Visa Requirements: Most nationalities require a visa for entry into Rwanda. You can apply online beforehand or on arrival at the airport for a $30 fee (for most countries). Check Rwanda Immigration and Emigration website for more details.

  • City Tour of Kigali

    • Places to Visit:
      • Kigali Genocide Memorial: A poignant and important site that commemorates the victims of the 1994 genocide, offering insight into Rwanda’s history.
      • Kigali Public Library (Ikaze Rwanda) and Kigali Art Centre: Showcasing local art, books, and cultural events.
      • Kigali Central Market for a taste of the local life and fresh produce shopping.
    • Activities: Visit the Inema Arts Center for music and dance performances in the evening.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking & Golden Monkey Experience (Volcanoes National Park)

  • Transportation: Book a shared taxi or hire a private car with a driver from your hotel. It takes approximately 2 hours to reach Volcanoes National Park.

  • Gorilla Trekking Permit: Costing around $1500 per permit, book this in advance through the Official Rwanda Development Board Website.

  • Golden Monkey Tracking: Optional additional activity within Volcanoes National Park for an extra fee (around $100 per person).

Day 3: Dian Fossey’s Karisoke Research Centre & Iby’iwacu Cultural Village

  • Visit Dian Fossey’s Karisoke Research Centre: Learn about the life and work of Dian Fossey, the renowned gorilla conservationist.

  • Iby’iwacu Cultural Village: Experience traditional Rwandan music, dance, storytelling, and craftwork in a beautiful setting.

Day 4: Nyungwe National Park (Canopy Walk & Chimpanzee Trek)

  • Transportation: Travel back to Kigali and continue to Nyungwe National Park (3-4 hours by car). Alternatively, you can book a flight from Kigali to Cyangugu or Kamembe airports.

  • Canopy Walk: Explore the treetops on the suspension bridge at Uwinka Visitor Centre, for breathtaking views of the rainforest.

  • Chimpanzee Trekking Permit: Costing around $100 per permit, book this in advance through the RDB website.

General Tips:

  • Currency: The official currency is the Rwandan Franc (RWF). Credit cards are widely accepted in larger towns and tourist areas, but it’s always good to have some local cash on hand.
  • Language: English and French are spoken by many locals, as well as Kinyarwanda, the national language.
  • Safety: Rwanda is generally a safe destination for tourists. However, always be aware of your surroundings and keep valuables secure.
  • Health: Yellow fever vaccination is required for entry into Rwanda. Malaria prophylaxis is also recommended for certain areas, particularly during the rainy seasons.
  • Electricity: The standard voltage in Rwanda is 230V/50Hz, with Type G and D power sockets. Consider bringing a universal travel adapter.
