Pitcairn Islands 5-Day Travel Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival & Settling In
- Arrival: The only way to reach Pitcairn is by boat via the M/V Trinity, which sails from Mangareva Island in French Polynesia. Check-in at Pitcairn Islands Visitors’ Bureau for orientation and accommodation assignment.
- Accommodation: You will be accommodated in one of the island’s guesthouses or homes rented out to tourists.
- Things to Know: English is the official language, but the locals also speak Pitkern, a creole English dialect. The islands operate on New Zealand time (NZST).
- Evening: Rest and acclimatize to the island’s peaceful rhythm. Enjoy a traditional Pitcairn dinner at your accommodation.
Day 2: Bounty Bay & Adamstown Tour
- Morning: Visit Bounty Bay, where HMS Bounty famously landed in 1790. Swim, sunbathe, or explore the historical site of Christian’s Cave.
- Lunch: Enjoy a packed lunch from your accommodation, as there are no restaurants on the island.
- Afternoon: Take a tour of Adamstown, the capital and only main settlement, to learn about the islands’ rich history and culture. Visit the Bounty Mutiny Memorial, St. Paul’s Church, and the Pitcairn Museum.
- Evening: Relax at the community center or watch the sunset at Tedside Beach.
Day 3: Island Exploration & Swimming
- Morning: Rent a quad bike to explore the island’s stunning landscapes, including the impressive Gunn’s Deer Sanctuary and the beautiful cliffs of K Obelisk.
- Lunch: Packed lunch or pre-arrange a picnic at one of the island’s scenic spots.
- Afternoon: Visit Little Pitcairn, one of the world’s smallest inhabited islands, by boat (weather permitting). Swim, snorkel, and spot rare birds like the Pitcairn Storm Petrel.
- Evening: Return to your accommodation, enjoy dinner, and share stories of the day with fellow travelers.
Day 4: Fishing & Relaxation
- Morning: Join a local for a fishing trip to catch fresh fish for dinner. Learn about traditional Pitcairn Island fishing methods.
- Afternoon: Spend the afternoon at your leisure, relaxing on one of the island’s many pristine beaches or exploring hidden coves.
- Evening: Prepare and enjoy your freshly caught fish for dinner, accompanied by locally grown vegetables and other dishes.
Day 5: Departure
- Morning: Spend your last moments on Pitcairn Island saying goodbyes to your hosts, the island, and its people.
- Departure: Make your way to the dock for departure aboard the M/V Trinity, taking with you unforgettable memories of this unique destination.
Visa Requirements & Practicalities
- Visitors need a valid passport with at least six months’ validity from the date of arrival and sufficient funds to support themselves during their stay. No visa is required for a stay up to 31 days.
- There are no ATMs or credit card facilities on Pitcairn, so bring enough cash in New Zealand dollars (NZD) for your entire stay.
