Pitcairn Island 4-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival and Settling In

Arrival at Pitcairn Island: You’ll be landing at Bounty Bay, the main settlement on the island. The small airport is operated by the residents of the island. Book your flight in advance.

Accommodation: Most visitors stay at the Pitcairn Islands Community Hostel, which offers comfortable rooms with shared facilities. Bookings can be made through the Pitcairn Islands Government website.

Familiarize yourself with the island: Spend the rest of the day exploring Bounty Bay, visiting the Pitcairn Post Office (the world’s most remote post office), and meeting some of the friendly residents.

Day 2: Discovering History and Nature

Adventure Beach: A short walk from Bounty Bay will take you to Adventure Beach, one of the island’s best beaches. Swim, snorkel, or simply relax on the sand.

Mutiny Beach: Visit Mutiny Beach, where Fletcher Christian and his followers landed after the famous mutiny on HMS Bounty. The area offers a peaceful atmosphere and stunning views.

The Bounty’s Grave Site: Head to the grave site of the HMS Bounty, which was scuttled in 1790. You can reach it by boat or kayak.

Day 3: Exploring the Interior and Meeting the Residents

Island Tour: Join a guided tour to explore the island’s interior, including historic sites like the old prison, St. Paul’s Church, and the cemetery. Tours can be arranged through your hostel or directly with the residents.

Craft Market: Visit the local craft market to purchase souvenirs, such as handmade pottery, woodcarvings, and t-shirts.

Meet the Residents: Spend the afternoon getting to know the island’s residents, who are known for their hospitality and friendliness. You might even get invited to a traditional Pitcairn Islands dinner!

Day 4: Leisurely Day and Departure

Relax: Spend your final day on the island relaxing at one of the beautiful beaches or exploring areas you may have missed.

Departure: Check out from your accommodation, say goodbye to your new friends, and prepare for departure. Remember that flights are limited, so make sure to book your return flight well in advance.

Things to Know:

  1. Visa Requirements: British Citizens do not require a visa to visit Pitcairn Island. Other nationalities should check with their local embassy or consulate for travel requirements and recommendations.
  2. Currency: The currency in Pitcairn Islands is the New Zealand Dollar (NZD).
  3. Communication: Mobile coverage on the island is limited, so it’s best to bring a satellite phone if you have one. Wi-Fi may be available at your accommodation, but don’t expect reliable connectivity.
  4. Food and Drink: Basic food supplies are available at the local store, but it’s recommended to bring any special dietary items with you. The island also has a restaurant, called ‘The Harbour Master’, which serves meals on certain days.
  5. Electricity: The electricity supply is 240 volts, and the plugs are of the Type I (flat blade attachment plug) or Type G (three-pin flat blade attachment plug).
