Two-Day Itinerary for Traveling in Paraguay

Day 1: Asunción (Capital City)

Morning:

  • Stroll around Independence Square (Plaza de la Independencia) and check out the Central Post Office with its distinctive clock tower.
  • Visit the National Pantheon, a mausoleum housing the remains of many important Paraguayan figures.

Evening:

  • Dinner at Casa Colorado Asunción, a restaurant located in a renovated colonial house offering traditional Paraguayan cuisine.
  • Enjoy a drink at one of the city’s vibrant bars or nightclubs like El Paseo or The Hive.

Day 2: Jesuit Missions and Encounter with Guaraní Culture

Morning:

  • Early departure from Asunción to visit the Jesuit Missions of La Santísima Trinidad de Paraná and Jesús de Tavarangue, UNESCO World Heritage Sites. These are outstanding examples of the architectural achievements of the Guaraní people under the influence of the Jesuits in the 17th and 18th centuries.
  • Guided tour of these historical sites to learn about their history and significance.

Afternoon:

  • Lunch at a local restaurant near the missions, where you can try typical Paraguayan dishes such as sopa paraguaya (cheese bread soup) or mandioca (cassava).
  • Return to Asunción in the afternoon for onward travel arrangements.

Transportation:

  • Taxis are widely available in Asunción, but it’s recommended to use ride-hailing apps like Taxibeat for a safer and more convenient experience. For longer trips, consider renting a car or booking private transport.

Things to Know:

  • Paraguay uses the Guarani as its secondary currency. US dollars are also widely accepted.
