Oslo Day Trips: 5 Day Itinerary (No Traps)
Five days carries the same spine as the 4-day plan, the Oslofjord ferry, Fredrikstad, Nordmarka and Drammen, then pushes further on day five: Lillehammer, close to two hours out by train and the only trip on this list that genuinely benefits from an early alarm. Only have 4 days? Drop Lillehammer and use the 4-day itinerary instead. Have a 6th day? The 6-day plan adds a second, quieter Oslofjord island.

Day 1: Land, settle in, and take the cheap ferry
Base yourself in Sentrum or Grünerløkka, both covered in visitoslo.com’s neighborhood guides and within walking distance of Oslo S and the Aker Brygge ferry terminals. A standard NOK 46 Ruter ticket gets you to Hovedøya in about 12 minutes for monastery ruins and swimming spots, no separate booking required.
Day 2: Fredrikstad’s walled old town
The Vy train runs just under an hour from Oslo S to Fredrikstad, close to hourly and every 30 minutes at rush hour. Gamlebyen, the walled old town across the river from the station, is the largest and best-preserved fortress town left in northern Europe; visitfredrikstadhvaler.com covers the exact connection, a short walk plus a 2-minute ferry crossing gets you inside the ramparts. Give it the full day.
Day 3: Nordmarka and Holmenkollen, free on the metro
T-bane Line 1 reaches Holmenkollen in about 25 minutes on the same standard ticket. The ski jump tower and museum run roughly NOK 160-190 (verify current pricing), and Nordmarka’s own roughly 2,600-kilometre trail network starts right behind it. Sognsvann lake at the end of Line 5 is the free summer swim option if the season allows it.
Day 4: Drammen, the one you can skip
A regional train covers the 30 to 40 minutes to Drammen, a genuine Norwegian city rather than a curated tourist stop, good for a low-key half-day of ordinary streets and cafes rather than a checklist attraction.
Day 5: Lillehammer, the longer push
Catch an early Vy train, something like the 08:00 from Oslo S, for the close-to-two-hour ride to Lillehammer. Maihaugen, Norway’s largest open-air museum, and the 1994 Winter Olympics sites, the ski jump and the Norwegian Olympic Museum among them, are worth the distance, but the return trip means a full day committed to trains either side of the sightseeing. Pack lunch for the platform rather than counting on a quick station meal before the train back.
Is Lillehammer better as a day trip or an overnight?
An overnight is genuinely more comfortable, since it removes the early alarm and the pressure of an 08:00 train, but a single day works if you commit to that early departure and accept a late return to Oslo. Treat the day-trip version as the budget option and the overnight as the relaxed one.
What’s the best order for these five day trips?
Front-load Fredrikstad and Nordmarka, the two most reliably worthwhile, then use Drammen as a lighter middle day before the longer Lillehammer push on day five, when you’ll want the rest of the trip’s logistics already sorted rather than juggling a new city and an early train on day one.
| Day trip | From Oslo | Travel time | Typical cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oslofjord islands (ferry) | Aker Brygge / Vippetangen | 12-15 min each way | NOK 46, standard Ruter ticket |
| Fredrikstad (Gamlebyen) | Oslo S by Vy train | about 1 hour each way | Verify current one-way fare on vy.no |
| Nordmarka / Holmenkollen | Oslo S by T-bane Line 1 | about 25 min each way | Standard Ruter ticket, no extra fare |

| Lillehammer | Oslo S by Vy train | close to 2 hours each way | Verify current one-way fare on vy.no |
Book the Lillehammer train the night before, not at the station that morning; the early departures fill with commuters and other day-trippers making the exact same calculation you just did.
