Mauritius 3 Day Itinerary
Three days on Mauritius is enough to do one region well, not the island. Base yourself in the west, around Flic en Flac and Le Morne, and you get the shortest airport transfer on the island plus the trip’s two heaviest hitters, Le Morne and Tamarin, within a short drive of each other. Trying to also fit in the north or the east means three days of driving instead of three days of Mauritius.

Day 1: Arrival and the west coast
SSR/MRU airport sits in the southeast near Mahébourg, and the drive to Le Morne is about 60 to 75 minutes, noticeably shorter than the run up to the north coast. Fill out the free All-in-One Travel Digital Form at safemauritius.govmu.org 48 to 72 hours before you land; it’s checked by QR code at arrival and any site charging a fee for it is a scam. Most nationalities enter visa-free for up to 60 days, but check your own passport’s rule first.
Rent a car for around $30-50 a day if you want to move at your own pace (drive on the left), or agree a taxi fare before getting in rather than relying on a meter. Settle into Flic en Flac, the west’s long sandy beach and the island’s best-regarded sunset spot, and use the evening to acclimatize rather than rushing straight into sightseeing.
Tip: mosquito precautions matter here too. Mauritius has an active 2026 chikungunya outbreak, and repellent plus covering up around dusk is a sensible habit for the whole trip.
Day 2: Tamarin dolphins and Le Morne Brabant
Book an early boat out of Tamarin for dolphin-watching. It’s a genuine year-round activity here, but the pod has a documented overcrowding problem, too many boats chasing the same small group of dolphins, so choose a licensed operator that keeps small numbers, doesn’t chase or touch the animals, and holds a respectful distance. Treat any operator promising a guaranteed close encounter as a red flag rather than a selling point.
In the afternoon, drive to Le Morne Brabant, the basalt mountain at the island’s southwestern tip. It’s UNESCO-listed for a heavy reason: escaped slaves, maroons, sheltered on its cliffs, and the story of those who leapt rather than be recaptured in 1835, not knowing abolition had just been declared, made it a global symbol of resistance to slavery. The lower footpaths, opened in 2016, are open to solo hikers, but the true summit requires a certified guide and a technical rock scramble known as the V-gap; decide in advance which version you’re doing. Skip any tour selling an “underwater waterfall” as something you can swim to from here; it’s a real formation of sand and silt cascading off the seabed, but it’s only visible from the air, by helicopter or seaplane, not from the shore or the water.
Tip: swim inside the reef lagoon, not out past it; the open water off this stretch of coast is genuinely stronger than the calm north.
Day 3: Black River Gorges and Casela
Start at Black River Gorges National Park, the island’s only national park, while the trails are still cool. The Alexandra Falls viewpoint and the Gorges viewpoint are both short walks from their car parks, and the forest holds real endemic species, the pink pigeon, the Mauritius kestrel, and the echo parakeet, if you go quietly.
In the afternoon, Casela World of Adventures runs ziplining, quad biking, and safari-style drives that raise no particular concerns. Its lion-walk and cub-encounter experiences are a different matter; they’ve drawn real criticism over how the animals are sourced and habituated, so if that bothers you, stick to the rest of the park and skip that add-on specifically.

Practical notes
Mauritius is US Level 2, crime-awareness rather than instability, one of Africa’s most stable democracies. The rupee (MUR) runs roughly 46-48 to the US dollar in 2026; check a live rate rather than trusting a fixed number. Cards work at hotels and larger restaurants, but keep some cash for stalls and boat operators. The population is roughly 48% Hindu, 32% Christian, and 18% Muslim plus a Sino-Mauritian minority, so plan around no single faith’s calendar dominating the island.
