Mauritania 6-Day Itinerary: Discovering the Sahara’s Hidden Gems

day 1 - Nouakchott:

Arrival at Nouakchott International Airport (visa requirements: check with your local embassy)
City tour: Visit the Grande Mosque, National Museum of Mauritania, and the lively Grand Market
Transportation: Taxis are widely available, or you can rent a car if comfortable with driving in Mauritania
Things to know: The official language is Arabic, but French and Hassaniya (a Berber dialect) are also commonly spoken
Accommodation: Hotel Mogador or similar

day 2 - Nouakchott to Atar:

Depart early morning for the 10-hour drive to Atar
Activities: Explore the ancient Ksour (fortified villages), including Chinguetti, a UNESCO World Heritage Site
Things to know: Remember to bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and a good book for the long journey
Accommodation: Hotel de la Gare or similar in Atar

day 3 - Atar to Ouadane:

Drive to Ouadane, approximately 4 hours away
Activities: Visit the well-preserved Ksar (fortress) and the nearby Aïr Mountains
Things to know: The desert can get quite hot during the day, so plan activities early or late in the day
Transportation: Hire a local guide with a 4x4 vehicle for the best experience
Accommodation: Basic guesthouse in Ouadane

day 4 - Ouadane to Chinguetti:

Return to Atar, then drive to Chinguetti, approximately 6 hours away
Activities: Explore the ancient library and take a camel ride through the desert
Things to know: Camel rides can be arranged with local guides
Transportation: Car or hire a guide with a 4x4 vehicle
Accommodation: Guesthouse in Chinguetti

day 5 - Chinguetti to Nouakchott:

Depart early for the 18-hour drive back to Nouakchott
Things to know: Break the journey with stops at interesting sites along the way, such as Oualat Atar and its impressive rock formations

Accommodation: Hotel Mogador or similar in Nouakchott

day 6 - Nouakchott:

Leisure day to explore more of Nouakchott, shop for souvenirs, or relax at the beach
Transportation: Taxis are widely available for getting around the city
Departure: Prepare for your departure from Nouakchott International Airport
